My name is Jessica Olney (Jess) and I've been working with Rohingya refugee youth for a long time. My Rohingya colleagues and I have led many online fundraisers for patients in need of emergency medical care over the years, and now we need to help a friend experiencing a health crisis.
This friend is also my former research assistant, whose name I will not mention here. He worked on many projects and studies while living in a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, and served the community as a human rights defender.
Due to a series of bad situations and bad luck, he became a victim of human trafficking and is now trapped in a small Southeast Asian country where there are only a few Rohingya. We have been working behind the scenes for months to try to get him out of there. But there are very few options for Rohingya, who are stateless and thus unable to cross international borders safely.
Now, he is in poor health and needs a serious, sensitive operation to remove a painful mass that could affect his vision and brain if left untreated. The surgery cost is quite high.
He is still in his 20s and needs another chance at life while we continue working on his case. Please consider supporting and sharing widely within your networks. We can offer our deepest gratitude and will update everyone on his condition once he's able to have the surgery.
Thank you in advance,
Jess
P.S. Photos are some of my old ones from the early years in the camps after the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar in 2017, which my friend escaped as a teenager.
P.P.S. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this case or know any organizations that may be able to help. We've tried many and are out of ideas.
