Life-Saving Surgery for Lu the Sock-Eater
Donation protected
LU (aka LUMO) is a hound dog with a nose for trouble, especially eating socks and fabric toys. He's also my #1 best friend, my companion, my baby. When a vet tells you that they require a deposit of 100% of the total estimate to save your dog's life...you find a way to make it work.
Lu ingested some fabric mass and requires surgery to save his life. The low estimate that we had to pay up front was $9300. The high estimate, for the care that he might end up needing as the situation develops, is over $11000.
Pet insurance will likely cover some of this, as a reimbursement, but that will take over a month and finding $10k on a moment's notice has really impacted us.
I am only 24, and I'm currently getting my PhD in Chemistry -- I only make $30k, and I just emptied my savings to pay back a $7000 loan that was used to pay for the liver biopsy that diagnosed his chronic liver condition last July. Any help that you can give me and my family is appreciated.
I just want my dog back.
About Lu
I got LU in May 2018 when I knew that I would be entering a PhD program. I called him my PhDoggo, and since then he has been with me through three apartments, and he has attended courses in Inorganic Chemistry, Group Theory, Environmental Chemistry, and Photochemistry. He is a very, very smart boy. He often uses that intelligence for evil, like learning how to open doors even though he has no opposable thumbs.

When I got LU, he was only about 35-40 pounds. He was skin and bones.
He had severe anxiety and ptsd -- he would freeze up and become completely unresponsive without any trigger, in the middle of the street or even with no one else around at all. The rescue I got him from thought that he might never be a playful dog, might never play fetch.
Within a month I managed to get a glimpse of the puppy he never knew how to be. Today Lu is a healthy 50 lbs, with a mischievous and playful personality. He loves my parents and car rides, rolling in grass and licking people's feet. But his #1 love is cuddling in bed (usually right on top of my pillow) or on the couch.

My friends like to call Lu "Kitty" because he is such a sweet, lazy, sassy personality. He curls up in a little catdog donut and prefers to be inside where it's warm and dry, and gives himself tongue baths all the time.

I've done my best to give Lu the best life a dog could ever have and would like to have many years left with my puppy. Thanks for any help.
