Life-saving surgery for Abby (Mayra) Hernandez

Please help us save Abby (Mayra) Hernandez, the most loving, caring, and wonderful person. She is a dear friend to us (and an honorary member of our family) and is incredibly special and important to many others.

Abby has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, the same disease that took her mother‘s life at a young age, and is currently in critical condition. She has survived surgeries, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, which seems to have successfully helped with her cancer. However, she has an intestinal blockage that requires emergency surgery. She and her family have exhausted their savings and are in dire need of financial help for the hospital to authorize this life-saving procedure, which they won’t do unless they pay for the surgery in advance.

As a young woman, Abby escaped the dangers and hardships of Guatemala. She came to the U.S. 35 years ago in search of a better life for herself and her children. She’s worked for over three decades here-- her home-- in order to provide for her family. This past year, Abby was experiencing severe health problems and could not afford to access help with the U.S. healthcare system. Unfortunately, in April 2021, Abby needed to make the incredibly difficult decision to leave the U.S. and return back to Guatemala so that she could receive the care she needs.

For those who aren’t lucky enough to know her, I’d like to share with you a little bit about Abby. Abby is the MOST loving, supportive, hard-working person that I know. She is a devoted mother to three grown children and a grandmother to an adorable, young grandson. She, also, has always treated my sister and I like daughters (and continues to carry horribly awkward middle school pictures of us around in her wallet). She celebrated every birthday and achievement of ours as if we were her own children. Abby is a huge animal lover and is absolutely adored by our pets who follow her around wherever she goes. Abby cried as much as my mom did when I left for college. When my mom went through cancer, Abby was there day in and day out for my sister and me. She is the biggest cheerleader of everyone in her life and constantly bends over backwards to put other people’s needs over her own. Everyone deserves someone like Abby in their lives.

We are turning to the community for help. For someone who always puts everyone before herself, and has given us and many others so much over the years, we are asking for your support to offset this financial burden.
