Hi, my name is Valentina. My mom, Luz Bejarano-Sanabria also known as Luzmi was the first to be diagnosed in 2002 with Chagas Disease among her siblings while she was pregnant with me. The doctors said due to this disease had weakened her heart, she would not survive the pregnancy but thanks to God, 20 years later she is still here with us :)

Unfortunately, 3 of her siblings have passed away in Colombia and 3 of them remain battling this Disease. She’s been stable for so long until the beginning of last year. In January 2022 she had a bloodless open heart surgery due to her Mitral Valve leaking and filling her lungs with liquid which didn’t let her breathe. She was doing well after the surgery until October 2022. The electrical part of her heart was failing which kept on weakening her heart even more. It got to the point where my mom suffered 16 Arrhythmia attacks in 7 hours which brought down her heart function to 20%.

The Doctors tried conservative options like stronger medications but nothing worked. They concluded that the only option she has to save her life is a heart transplant. Unfortunately, most surgeons and hospitals in New York State aren’t willing to take her case due to her previous open heart surgery which has caused this procedure to be high risk being she needs a bloodless heart transplant. Despite the discouragement, we refused to give up and continued our search. Finally, with help from our friends. We were able to find a hospital and surgeon in Chicago, Illinois that has had plenty of successful bloodless heart transplant surgeries.

We find ourselves in a very difficult situation due to that my Dad’s Job provides the Insurance that would be covering for this surgery, therefore my dad would have to stay in New York. After the surgery, my mom would need to stay in Chicago for a year since she will be monitored for any emergencies by the surgeon which leaves us in humble need of financial assistance to help my mom in this huge life transition. We will need help with traveling, living, and food expenses. As well as any copays or out-of-coverage expenses that her insurance may not possibly cover.

Los médicos dijeron que debido a esta enfermedad se le ha debilitado el corazón, no sobreviviría al embarazo pero gracias a Dios, 20 años después sigue aquí con nosotros :)

 Lamentablemente, 3 de sus hermanos han fallecido en Colombia y 3 de ellos continúan luchando contra esta Enfermedad. Ha estado estable durante tanto tiempo hasta principios del año pasado. En enero de 2022 se sometió a una cirugía a corazón abierto sin derramamiento de sangre debido a que su válvula mitral goteaba y sus pulmones se llenaban de líquido que no la dejaba respirar. Estaba bien después de la cirugía hasta octubre de 2022. La parte eléctrica de su corazón estaba fallando, lo que seguía debilitándolo aún más. Llegó al punto en que mi madre sufrió 16 ataques de arritmia en 7 horas, lo que redujo su función cardíaca al 20 %. 

Los médicos probaron opciones conservadoras como medicamentos más fuertes, pero nada funcionó. Llegaron a la conclusión de que la única opción que tiene para salvar su vida es un trasplante de corazón. Desafortunadamente, la mayoría de los cirujanos y hospitales en el estado de Nueva York no están dispuestos a aceptar su caso debido a su cirugía a corazón abierto anterior, lo que ha provocado que este procedimiento sea de alto riesgo, ya que necesita un trasplante de corazón sin sangre. A pesar del desánimo, nos negamos a darnos por vencidos y continuamos nuestra búsqueda. Finalmente, con la ayuda de nuestros amigos. Pudimos encontrar un hospital y un cirujano en Chicago, Illinois, que ha tenido muchas cirugías exitosas de trasplante de corazón sin sangre.

 Nos encontramos en una situación muy difícil debido a que el trabajo de mi papá proporciona el seguro que cubriría esta cirugía, por lo que mi papá tendría que quedarse en Nueva York. Después de la cirugía, mi madre tendría que quedarse en Chicago durante un año, ya que el cirujano la controlará para cualquier emergencia, lo que nos deja con una humilde necesidad de asistencia financiera para ayudar a mi madre en esta gran transición de vida. Necesitaremos ayuda con los gastos de viaje, manutención y alimentación. Además de cualquier copago o gasto fuera de cobertura que su seguro posiblemente no cubra.
