La Ribera Needs Life Saving Fire Equipment

We are trying to raise money to purchase Fire Equipment for the community of La Ribera BCS Mexico.
They need a volunteer Fire Department and we are going to get them equipped with the emergency response resources they so desperately need.

A Recent Tragedy

On August 7th this woman, Maria Teresa Lomeli died after being trapped in a house fire in La Ribera, BCS Mexico.

The nearest fire engine(s) with trained firefighters responded from San Jose del Cabo and took about an hour to reach the small town. By the time the responders arrived the house was destroyed and a young life was lost.

If the community of  La Ribera had been equipped with their own fire engine and trained firefighters this might have ended differently for the Lomeli family. Find out more

The Issue
The small town of La Ribera is situated 45 miles north of San Jose del Cabo, on the southern Baja peninsula. It currently and historically has relied on firefighters from both San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas to respond to fires and other emergencies within the town. Due to long response times from those cities, by the time of arrival, both lives and property are sometimes beyond saving. We are currently in the process of identifying town members who wish to be volunteer firefighters and training them. We have secured protective clothing (turnouts) from the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District in addition to medical supplies and equipment from other departments, and are now in search of an appropriate vehicle for them to respond in.

My Background
41388780_1566149010203689_r.jpeg

My name is Steve Alcorn and I am a retired fire captain formally of the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, in Incline Village, Nevada. I first visited La Ribera in 2000 and fell in love with the community and its people. It is very rural in comparison to Cabo San Lucas, with the majority of the inhabitants making their living off of agriculture, ranching, and fishing.

When I arrived in 2000 I recognized that there existed a serious gap in emergency fire response. The occasional wildland-palm tree fires were met by local town folks in Levi's and water trucks and were mitigated without serious incident. But it was noted that response to building fires and other rescue scenarios took too much time and that a true life safety problem was at hand.

It was the death of Miss Lomeli the other evening that is pushing us to finally close this gap in service and to stand up a volunteer fire brigade in the town to prevent this from ever happening again.

We have received assurances from the Chief of the San Jose del Cabo firefighters that his organization would be honored to help train our volunteers, with myself and other retired firefighters assisting where needed. We are committed to making this a reality by equipping local citizens to respond to emergencies and improving the welfare of this wonderful community.

Our Goals:

--UPDATES as of 11/5/2019--
Our Goals have changed in light of recent developments in campaign progress.

#1) We have a commitment from the forthcoming La Ribera, BCS Four Seasons Resort & Hotel to build our fire station! Learn More

#2) We need a quick-response fire-rescue vehicle.
Our engine, while adequate for response to fires within the local community, is slow to respond out to Highway 1, where serious vehicle accidents happen often. A small fast attack response vehicle will enable responders to reach these accidents faster and hopefully save more lives.

-UPDATED GOALS as of 9/7/2019-
Our Goals have changed in light of a Fire Truck being allocated for La Ribera(!).

#1) Our goal is to raise $20,000 to set up a volunteer fire department in La Ribera BCS Mexico.
We need to get the volunteer Fire Fighters outfitting, equipment, training and maintenance as well as administrative and logistical support. We are getting a lot of support from fire departments and some of these needs may be met with direct donations of equipment, etc. We will keep this page up to date on our progress!

With the help of people like yourself, we can equip and train local citizens,  who can respond within the community and prevent another tragedy from befalling the community.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Previous Goal: Our goal is to raise $20,000 for a Fire/Rescue response vehicle for the La Ribera and surrounding communities.  We have found the following types of vehicles at a Government auctions.  A vehicle of this type would be perfect.  GSA Fire Truck Auction ) -
Now they have a great fire truck (!) so we need to look at other needs as described above. The new fire truck is pictured below.
