Lifesaving Bouvier needs help to walk again!
Hi everyone. My name is Kay King and along with my friend Vicki Rhode we are asking for your help. Our good friend Malvina Simon needs your help for Scarlett, her beautiful 7 yr old Bouvier that is not only her support dog , but her heart.
Scarlett pushed up a second story window and jumped out. When Malvina got home that night she found her laying immobile on the ground. She got help getting her in the car and rushed her to the emergency hospital. She was kept in the ICU for three days. From there Malvina's nightmare got worse. Scarlett was diagnosed with fractured metatarsal in her right foot and Hyperextended Achilles Tendons in both front legs.
No one knows why she pushed that window open, most likely she heard something that caused her instincts to click in and she reacted to protect mom. When Malvina told me what had happened my first thought was how high that is and how grateful I was that Scarlett had survived. A dog falling from a second story window is like person falling from a six story window. Her injuries were severe but she was alive.
The road to recovery for Scarlett is a long one that has so far been full of heartbreaking ups and downs. She was initially told that she would need surgery on both of her front legs at a cost of $10,000 dollars per leg not counting bandage changes, physical therapy, follow up visits. They also told her the surgery does not have a very good outcome and she probably would never walk again. The second and third surgeons she consulted said they wouldn't even consider doing that surgery. One of them mentioned braces as a possibility and a company named GoHeroGo that makes custom braces. Malvina has been working with them to try and find what will work for Scarlett. Each brace is built after custom molds are done of both legs and feet at the vet. In order for the molds to be made the surgeon removes the bandages and metal splints and under sedation the molds are made. Then her splints and wrappings are put back on and the molds are shipped out to GoHeroGo.
I started this out by telling you that Scarlett is a lifesaving Service Dog. She has saved Malvina's life a couple of times by alerting that something life threatening was wrong. One of those times was when Malvina was at a hotel. Scarlett crawled on top of her on the bed and kept barking until a cleaning lady heard the commotion and came in and saw that something was very wrong and called an ambulance. Malvina's heart was stopping. She would have died if not for Scarlett... So as I said she really is Malvina's heart.
Scarlett is doing her part also. She is a tough girl as all Bouvs are. To a Bouv nothing matters more than their people and Scarlett shows that everyday by keeping her mom's spirits up with something as small as tail wag or by allowing all of these strangers to poke, prod, and manipulate her without complaint no matter how painful it is. She is getting stronger but is still only able to walk a few feet and that is in her metal splints. Getting the right fit and braces is still needed, as is physical therapy. I believe taking some of the financial burden off of her mom will get Scarlett back on her feet sooner.
If you can find it in your heart to help sweet Scarlett it would be so very much appreciated, no matter how much. Also Sharing this GOFUNDME to your social media and friends could help tremendously! We are very grateful to everyone for their support.
