23 year-old Michael Brown has lived in his rent stabilized apartment with his mother since he was six months old. This past December Michael tragically lost his mother. Two days after her burial Michael went to take out the trash and came back minutes later to find that his landlord had locked him out of the only home he has ever known.
Michael has tried desperately to get his landlord and eventually the police to let him back in to his home but he was denied at every turn. Michael was instead forced to watch his personal and family possessions torn out of his home, broken, and locked in the basement of his building. Michael was forced to take his fight to housing court but his landlord has delayed the process at every opportunity. While his case drags on Michael has been made homeless for the past 62 days in freezing temperatures while grieving the death of his mother.
Being locked out of his home has been devastating for Michael. He has been without a safe place to live, cook, shower, or to spend time with his four year old son for over two months. He has been forced to sleep in the hallway of his apartment building and at work in between shifts. While he works six days a week, the price of temporary housing in New York City is astronomical and his case in court is likely to take months longer to restore him back to his home. Please contribute to and share Michael’s GoFundMe to help provide him a temporary safe and stable place to live while he fights for his home against his landlord who attempts to illegally displace one of the last rent stabilized tenants in his building.
