In May of 2019, the California Field School and Life Academy are organizing a two week bike trip down the Pacific coast for twenty five high school students, and we need your help to do it!

ABOUT THE TRIP

Over the course of two weeks, students will bicycle over 300 miles from Eureka to San Francisco and learn about the ecological impacts of resource extraction, from the logging of California’s redwood forests to hunting sea otters to present day hydroelectric projects.  We’ll talk to people working to restore and preserve the native ecosystems of California and examine the effects of climate change on the redwood forests.

This bike tour is part of the Life Academy Post Session program, an innovative exploratory learning experience where students in mixed grade classes earn Art and PE credit through intensive, off site learning.

Because OUSD doesn't provide funding for this trip, we're reaching out to our communities to ask you to help these students get out on their bikes!



ABOUT LIFE ACADEMY

Life Academy is an Oakland Unified School district small public school located in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, and the vast majority of students are low-income students of color.  The school aims to prepare students to become future health professionals, and is committed to providing authentic learning experiences through project-based learning, field trips, and extensive internship programs focused on health and science. 



ABOUT THE FIELD SCHOOL

The California Field School takes young people on bike tours and backpacking trips through places that have been pivotal in California history. By connecting with California’s diverse communities and landscapes, and exploring social and environmental justice issues past and present, participants gain an unparalleled understanding of their place within the story of California - and the leadership skills and confidence to write the next chapter of that story on their own.

Any funds raised over the actual costs of the Life Academy Post-session trip will be used for more educational bike trips in 2019. 

OTHER WAYS TO SUPPORT
