We are raising money for our friend, Mayan Indigenous Leader Nicolas Morales Moshan. His Lacandon Jungle region has been defined by poverty, strife, and violent repression. He is a transcendent leader committed to reconciliation, economic progress, and gold-standard conservation education in the Lacandon, which is North America's most biodiverse jungle. As part of a feature-length documentary, we've been documenting his herculean efforts to bring economic progress and nurture environmental best practices in his remote jungle region. He recently received a tremendous opportunity to come to the USA to convene with other indigenous leaders around land rights and climate change. Unfortunately, he became ill right before his trip and was diagnosed with a severely enlarged prostate. A common condition in the developed world, lifelong lack of healthcare access has made his condition more urgent. Urologists applied a catheter and have made clear he will require a surgery to reduce his prostate. Without surgery, he could experience serious damage to his kidneys. If this happens, he will no longer be able to represent his community’s interests and advocate for their rights.
We are fundraising for the costs of his surgery and related tests and procedures. All funds go directly to support his health. Thank you so much for helping Nicolas, his Tzotzil Mayan community of San Gregorio, and Nicolas's forest conservation efforts.
