Life Saving Surgery for Biscuit
Hello Everyone! This is DeDe here, owner of Pups & Pals Pet Lounge! Today was a very scary day for us at Pups & Pals. As a dog daycare owner, my worst fear is getting a phone call that one of the pups in my care is sick or needs medical attention. It is not a call that I get very often, but when I do, it is a very scary and stressful time. Today, I received one of those calls. One of our beloved pups named Biscuit started showing the early signs of bloat while playing with his pals today. Bloat is a very serious condition that can be fatal if not treated right away. The stomach fills with gas and then twists, and the abdomen distends. It develops without warning and if left untreated, is fatal.
I must say, I am beyond impressed by my amazing, incredible, and attentive staff here at Pups & Pals! Not only did they recognize the early signs of bloat, but they quickly jumped into action and rushed Biscuit to the emergency vet to seek immediate care. Because of their keen eye and rapid response, Biscuit has a high chance of survival. Bloat is a fatal condition without an extensive abdominal surgery to go in and untwist the stomach. Biscuit is undergoing this surgery today, but it is not cheap. This surgery is costing Biscuit's family $4500 which they have said they simply can't afford. At the vet today, they explained to us that they couldn’t begin any life saving treatment for Biscuit without payment upfront. While I completely understand why this practice must be in place, this was challenging to hear as Biscuit’s owner was not able to pay. I have paid the medical bill in order for them to begin treatment to save Biscuit, as time was of the essence. I would do this for any of my clients in order to save their pups life. We are helping Biscuit's family in every way we can, and one of those ways is to share Biscuit's story with you all today and ask if anyone is willing to donate to Biscuit's veterinary bill.
Biscuit has been attending daycare at Pups & Pals for about a year now. He is one of the most happy go lucky pups you'll ever meet! At over 100 lbs he may look a bit intimidating to some, but Biscuit is a bundle of joy who just wants to be everyone's best friend. He loves to come play at Pups & Pals with all of his best pals! Biscuit is normally very active, alert, and jolly while at Pups & Pals! Today, something was not right with Biscuit. He seemed "off." He started to lay down, then stand back up, then lay down, then stand back up. It was definitely a behavior we had never seen him do before. He was clearly experiencing some pain or discomfort. As I type this, a tear is coming to my eye as I think of how proud I am of my amazing staff at Pups & Pals. They are so attentive and loving with each and every dog that is in our care. They know their personalities and their mannerisms so well. Because they know Biscuit so well, they were able to pick up on the fact that Biscuit was not acting like his usual self. They saw that he was also panting heavy and rapidly which is another sign of bloat. Within just a few short minutes of picking up on Biscuit's odd behavior, they had him loaded into Erin's car and on the way to Central Texas Veterinary Speciality and Emergency Hospital. I am beyond blessed, grateful, and proud of the quick response of my team today! Time is essential in a bloat situation and they couldn't have gotten Biscuit to the emergency vet any faster!
Here at Pups & Pals, we are all saying a prayer that Biscuit will make a full recovery from this surgery and be back to playing again with his pals soon. Every little bit helps towards paying his medical bills, and his family will be forever grateful for any contributions!
