Life saving out of country surgery for Kala

Hello & Thank you to everyone who will read, share, donate or even send well wishes!

We as a family are asking for help to donate to a life saving surgery for Kala out of country in the Philippines. We are only asking for half the cost as this will come to about 40-50k when all said and done.

Kala has always been a bright, athletic hard working woman. From playing elite goalie in hockey, being on the ice sometimes 2 times in a day and those intense workouts keeping up with all those boys… It didn’t stop her. Neither did her diagnosis of Crohn’s at just the young age of 11 years old. Then having a bowel resection at 18 years old. Yet it didn’t stop her from living her life and her dreams. Opening up her first barbershop before the age of 30 and building it in a new province after choosing to up root from her home grounds and move and not letting anything stopping her in the way.

and then…

she felt a change. It was slow, at first she focused on what she knows best with her Crohn’s but then the Crohn’s came out of remission which finally got controlled after a year but the damage was done it was too late. Her Crohn’s gave her a very very rare illness that not much is known about it. It got bad… Kala tried with all her might for a few years to keep her Barbershop Business open, she went in so sick every day, throwing up before clients, after, during & even fainting & passing out. & the pain… unbearable. That was just the minimum of it. Soon it got so bad that she knew she had to slow down but even that showed to only help for a bit. Soon the hospital was her second home and when she was home no one was sure if she was going to survive this. It got scary scary that we won’t go into the details. What had to happen was to remove Kala from her Business she loved, friends, clients, friends she turned into her family…and remove her from the province she was making her beautiful life in. To be put on bed rest with her family close to her in a new province where finally the proper diagnosis started. That’s when we got the news…

Kala has Willies syndrome also know as SMAS (Wilkie's syndrome, also known as Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS), occurs when the superior mesenteric artery compresses the duodenum, leading to gastrointestinal symptoms, bowel obstructions, organ failure, malnutrition and can be a debilitating life threatening-condition.

In order for Kala to get any kind of nutrition and help here she has to go for weekly IV hydration, have an NJ feeding tube for feeding, Gets multiple vitamin & mineral shots weekly & am on a low grade chemo. Among many other things she does just to try to stay a float. Thankfully with family around they have been able to drive her to all her appointments and help with daily living.

So why out of country to the Philippines?!
Kala saw surgeons in Canada and unfortunately the surgery they have has a 80% fail rate and the surgeon well let’s just say he was great but unfortunately the procedure isn’t.

Thats where Dr Alvear comes in! He is the one surgeon who directly deals with fixing the SMAS not just a by pass surgery that fails and doesn’t fix the actual compression he is creating a successful surgery by actually removing the problem then trying to surpass it! Feel free to look him up he’s also on Facebook.

We have seen Kala go from this bright bubbly hard working woman to practically a bed ridden sick just turned 34 year old (Her Birthday just happened) unfortunately it will just get worse and worse without this much needed life saving surgery because what is a life on a couch or in bed just slowly dying.

The surgery itself is 30K CND then the plane tickets were over $6000 then Kala has to be there for at least a month for recovery and another 5 months bed rest and it will take about a full year to heal. On top of that another surgery may need to be done (but that’s for another time.) Kala hasn’t been able to live her life properly for a while now (physically, mentally & financially) and it’s been hard on so many people we want to be able to give to her and get her life back and any extra help would mean the world to Kala, her family and all the people who want to stop seeing her suffer and live her life to the fullest again!

We know Kala and her capability to strive in life and we just want her to get the surgery she needs so she can recover and live the life she deserves again after her life being put on hold for the last 5 years from this horrible illness.

Thank you to all! All the love, shares, support, donations and all that is so appreciated. It all is so helpful!
