Essential medication for Trevor
Donation protected
Hi I'm Patricia Battey, Trevor and I celebrated 49 years of marrage on November 13th 2020 and we are looking forward to celebrating our 50th in 2021,
then on November 21st 2020 we were devastated with the news that Trevor had stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
He had been having stomach pains and a scan revealed a tumor on the pancreas and also a spot on the liver, we were told with chemo his life expectancy was 12 months.
After the first bout of chemo and on the rest week Trevor developed PJP pneumonia caused by a fungus which is in everybody's lungs but doesn't cause problems unless your immune system is low as his was due to the chemo doing its work.
After 8 days in the ICU at Peninsula Private and another week on the ward he was well enough to go home.
2 weeks later he was admitted again with blood clots on the lungs and a high temperature. He was in the ICU this time for 12 days and was put on a ventilator as he had developed an allergic reaction to the medication for the PJP a drug call Bactrim.
A replacement drug for the PJP was found called Atovaquone however this drug is not covered by the PBS scheme and cost $980 for 21 days supply.
Trevor is home now but because the treatment for the PJP will be required ongoing he can't have chemo and has to take a maintenance dose daily of the Atovaquone to keep the PJP away.
Our health fund will not pay for the PJP medication so we are forced to pay the $980 every 3 weeks.
Trevor is a loving husband, father, and grandfather and this extra expense and worry is not what we need at this time.
We would realy appreciate your help.
