There is a saying I remember reading that stated: “The best advice I can give to anyone going through a rough patch is to never be afraid to ask for help.” Today, I’m asking for help for my niece, Genn Powell.
Genn was born with a condition called Biliary atresia. This condition presents as scarred or blocked ducts inside and outside of the liver. The odds of survival without a liver transplant are very low, but Genn has done well with her native liver for 40 years! She is one of the oldest living patients without the benefit of a new liver.
Being in and out of the hospital for infections is nothing new to Genn. She has been dealing with this for decades. However, since January of this year, her health and that liver that has served her so well for so long have been on a rapid decline. For the past several months, she has been hospitalized nearly every other week. With this rapid decline, her doctors recently concluded that Genn is now in end-stage liver disease, and she has been listed for a liver transplant.
Genn works as an ICU nurse in the very hospital where the transplant will take place. Her passion is cardiac care, but she was in the thick of things all during Covid. She loves her work and picks up extra shifts whenever she is able. Unfortunately, because of her health, it is difficult to keep up with even her regular shifts now. She will likely have to stop work altogether very soon.
Circumstances that are beyond control (the crazy world now) have kept Genn’s husband; Byron unable to find work for quite some time. Soon, Genn’s income will be gone. Recovery from a liver transplant is 4-6 months.
Genn is kindhearted, forever unassuming, and gentle to her very soul. What she is not, is a person to ask for help. She and Byron both have always just figured it out. She always knew she would need a transplant and did what she needed to prepare for that. What she could not prepare for was a pandemic and all the financial fallout from that.
So, I am asking for help for Genn, Byron, and their fur babies. No income for 4-6 months will be nothing short of catastrophic for this family. There will be no question – they will lose their home. They are states away from family that could help with a place to stay and Genn must stay in the area where she has the transplant during her recovery. They need financial help. All funds will be used for living expenses before and during recovery.
I know there are still good people in this world. In fact, I’m counting on it. If you can contribute, please do so. Your contribution will be forever appreciated by myself and my entire family.
