Life Saving Care Needed for Zucca

Donation protected
I've been blessed to have Zucca in my life since 2019. I was desperately trying to switch careers in pursuit of a healthier life, and as I was downshifting away from the stresses of running a Michelin-starred bar program, I realized I had more time on my hands to give back to the world.

My partner back then found the adorable "Mudpie" at the Berkeley Humane shelter, and we went to see him one Saturday. Our vision of a perfect adoptee took a sharp turn when we were told we couldn't see him without first filling out an exhaustive questionnaire. He'd been found on the street in Stockton and eventually placed with some well-meaning college kids who thought he'd be a gentle, low-maintenance lap dog. He was highly leash reactive and anxious. We pushed through our fears, and after asserting our ability to patiently help him with his issues, they let us see him off-leash in an adjoining space.

I immediately fell in love with the goofiest, most good-natured, handsome dog I'd ever seen. I'll never forget the look of sheer joy on his face, galloping around that warehouse with a deflated soccer ball between his jaws. We named him after an Italian amaro that had deep significance to me, and saying his name has always reminded me of how lucky I am to have made such positive changes in my life with him by my side.

Last Sunday, he started showing no interest in eating and was unable to keep any fluids down. The last 96 hours have been full of visits to the vet and eventually the pet ER, as X-rays, bloodwork, and eventually an ultrasound discovered that he has a life-threatening blockage in his GI tract.

Family has always been so important to me, and while I'm not prepared for these expenses, there's no way I'm giving up on this wonderful man. He's only 6 years old, and I know he has years of wonderful life still ahead.

If you know me, you know I hate to ask for help. But if Zucca or I have ever touched your life with a lovely meal, a cocktail recommendation, or great conversation, we graciously accept any help with getting him the life-saving care he needs.

Best,

Don
