We all try our best to prepare for the future by saving and planning, but how many of us are prepared for a traumatic injury that leaves us temporarily or permanently disabled? Many of you are already aware, but on Thursday, June 24th, 2021, Dean Huston was riding his bike when he came across an aluminum can on the side of the road. When he went to pick up the can he slipped on the concrete, fell into a ditch, and laid face down in the water until a passerby found him and called 911. This was the beginning of the very long journey that Dean and his wife Teresa are currently facing. All thanks to God, Dean has is cognition, he can eat and drink without a feeding tube, and he is slowly making progress. However, this accident has left Dean with minimal use of his arms, he is still unable to use his hands, and he is technically now considered a quadriplegic requiring a wheelchair. Until Dean improves, he will require 24-hour care at home for feeding, routine hygiene such as teeth brushing, and intermittent catheterization since his injury has also affected his bladder. Dean is currently in an acute rehab facility working every day to get stronger. His anticipated date of discharge to return home with his wife Teresa is on August 12, 2021. Although they planned for the future in many ways by purchasing a ranch-style home etc., they were not prepared for this tragic event that has left Dean almost completely dependent. Most of us do not put much thought into our activities of daily living. We hop out of bed, jump in the shower, and get ready for our day. Unfortunately, it is going to take a lot of changes/modifications for Dean and Teresa to find even a small amount of normalcy. They are going to need a wheelchair van to transport Dean to and from doctors’ visits or to travel anywhere outside of his home, since his arms and legs are not working he will require a Hoyer lift to help Teresa transfer him out of his bed and into his wheelchair, a hospital bed will be required to help reposition Dean so he does not get bed sores and to help with transfers, he will need a motorized wheelchair, and a shower chair with arms and wheels. This is just the beginning, and as time goes on there will be more needs. Additionally, Teresa has had to miss work and lose out on income to be with Dean, and this will continue until things get more settled. Dean and Teresa are very loving and giving people. They would never feel comfortable asking for help, but this time it is warranted! Please join me in helping this amazing couple by donating as much as you can. They would not hesitate if the shoe were on the opposite foot. Thoughts and prayers for Dean and his family as they navigate this challenging and emotionally draining path.
