For 3 years, Shawn Freake has been battling with liver cirrhosis. Over the past few months, it’s rapidly progressed to end stage requiring transplantation.

Shawn is placed on a deceased donors list, but the wait times for such can be quite lengthly. His disease has worsened so quickly that he will likely not survive to wait what could potentially be 18 months.

His daughter Julia, who is the only possible candidate in the family, is willing to go through the work up process, and donate a portion of her liver to save her father’s life.

With this, comes extensive financial burdens. Shawn has not been able to work since 2024, and Julia is a single mom of three young children; neither of which have any remaining sick time through their work.

Both Shawn and Julia will have to travel from Newfoundland to Toronto for work ups including, blood work, match testing, scans, etc., then return home and wait for the call.

If they are a match, approximately two months later they will both return to Toronto for the live donation, and weeks of recovery.
