Support Fili Seru in His Battle Against MND
Filimoni "Fili" Seru, born on March 11, 1970, is a former Fijian rugby winger renowned for his speed, sidestepping skills, and strong defense. He proudly represented Fiji in both the 1991 Rugby Union World Cup and the 1995 Rugby League World Cup. Fili played for several esteemed clubs, including Nabua Rugby Club, South Queensland Crushers, Illawarra Steelers, and Hull FC, making his mark in both rugby union and rugby league.
From his early school days, Fili was known for his talent and athleticism. He was a back-to-back Blue Ribbon Champion and a key player in the Nabua Rugby Club’s 7s team, alongside rugby legends such as Waisale Serevi, Tomasi Cama, and the Rauluni Brothers. He was also part of the Hong Kong Sevens teams that won three consecutive tournaments, solidifying his place in Fijian rugby history.
Today, at 55, Fili is facing an incredibly difficult challenge—he is battling Motor Neuron Disease (MND). MND has taken the lives of rugby legends like Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir, and now, Fili too is struggling with this devastating disease. MND damages the motor neurons in the body, leading to muscle weakness and wasting. Unfortunately, there is no cure at present, though treatments can slow its progression.
Fili first began noticing weakness in his shoulder in July 2023, but the medical team attributed it to another condition (gout) and later diagnosed it mild stroke in June 2024. It wasn’t until a visit to Dr. Om Prakash in Fiji that he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Neuropathy in December 2024, and later, in May 2025, with MND. Despite these challenges, Fili remains determined and resilient, supported by the same strong values and bonds that defined his rugby career.
Throughout his life, Fili has always been focused on making his supporters proud, and the love and support from his community have been a source of strength as he faces this new fight.
We are reaching out to the public to ask for your support in raising funds for Fili and his family during this challenging time. The money raised will help provide the necessary care and comfort for Fili as he battles MND, ensuring that he has the support he needs during this difficult journey.
Please consider donating to his GoFundMe page to help ease his family’s burden and make Fili’s life more comfortable as he continues to fight with the same courage and determination that made him a rugby legend
