Life After My Mastectomy
Donation protected
Hi everyone,
My name is Toye-Mary. 4 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare form of a Sarcoma cancer which appeared as a tumour in my left breast. After two initial surgeries, a lumpectomy and a re excision of the walls in my left breast, I lived cancer free, or so I thought until early 2020. Fast forward 4 years to April 2020, to my surprise and at the peak of the pandemic, a new lump appeared.
I was gripped with much fear, but it was very important to get checked and deal with what was to come next. Unexpectedly for me, it was a mastectomy, of my left breast.
It has been an eventful 9 months and counting, that has changed my life forever.
However, I am still here to tell the tale that many have not been fortunate to tell; many because they may feel silenced or traumatised by their experience.
This fundraiser will be used to benefit other young women like myself - breast cancer survivors.
My main aim for this fundraising is to create a physical safe space, based in East London that will provide a wide range of services to every woman who has ever been diagnosed with any type of breast cancer. I want to give a voice to all women who wish to speak and share their stories too, and as a young woman myself, it is incredibly important that I encourage others to make better, well informed and healthier lifestyle choices, beginning with diet and nutrition.
What else will this campaign aim to achieve:
- A Centre (Providing, pre- operative information as well as aftercare).
- Support groups formed to support ladies from the moment of diagnosis.
- Information on benefit services that are available to each woman.
- Professional advice on the best treatments, (giving all the space to make the right decisions for themselves and not being forced or rushed into anything).
- Diet and nutrition classes (A very vital topic in the case of any cancer fighter), I have and continue to learn so much on this topic and I have so much to share.
- Cooking and organic recipe sharing classes.
- I also want to create a creative space within this centre for every woman who needs to express themselves respectively.
- Friends/Family members of survivors can also visit this centre with their loved one(s).
The aim of all of this is to keep every woman surrounded by the love, care, support and the attention-to-detail regarding their individual diagnosis. However, in addition to this, I am looking to take the gene test and create an awareness for how important it is for every cancer patient to have access to this as it is not provided by the NHS. It costs up to £1,000.
I may never know why I had to go through this at such a young age, being 30 years old, but I am here now, and it is very important to me that even after my diagnosis and a mastectomy to be reminded that I can still step into purpose and help others. I have always been very good at that.
