RECOVERY AFTER TRAGEDY
Hello and thank you for taking the time to meet Karter Lane and learn a bit about why his story has landed in front of you today.
I have created this GoFundMe on behalf of Karter's momma-Nina, aka Laura Huffman, (Grandmother) who has had sole guardianship since he was 8 months old.
OUR WHY: During the early evening hours of January 11, 2024, Karter, (3/11/2020), was chasing his little dog, Daisy, and when Daisy went into the pool, little Karter did not hesitate to follow. The moments seemed like an eternity for Laura as she anxiously attempted to rescue Karter. Finally, after fifty minutes of no heartbeat, Karter's heart started beating again as he took his first breath of life. Unfortunately, the crucial time his brain was deprived of oxygen led to an anoxic brain injury and the many ailments that go along with that.
Because Karter survived, his case was deemed an Anoxic Brain Injury secondary to a "Near-Drowning" event.

Karter spent 6 months and 11 days in ICU/rehab at Dell Children's Medical Center before he was able to finally go home. Since, he has been remitted five times for a variety of concerns. Karter is now destined to a wheelchair for mobility, an assistive speaking device, by way of his eyes, to communicate, and a feeding tube for nutrition and medications to minimize the damage to his muscles/tone and limited ability to function on his own, as a result of the brain injury. His movements are spastic and non-purposeful, much like that of cerebral palsy.
Although this has changed who Karter was and now is, his biggest attribute of determination shines through each and every day as he fought with that same determination and resilience to get to where he is today.

We greatly appreciate any and all donations made in efforts to pave the road a little smoother for Karter and his Momma-Nina. He will not be your typical little guy growing up moving forward; however, with y'all's help and support, we can make it the very best we can...for Karter.
Your kindness and generosity will aid in paying for a much-needed wheelchair, continued therapies, devices and modalities to aide in his daily life, and the excessive travel expenses required getting Karter to and from his appointments (San Angelo to Austin and back).
Thank you again, in advance, for taking the time to hear about Karter's story. He is an amazing little boy who continues to amaze us with his strength and ability to overcome and smile, even on the worst of days.
