Life After Amputation: HELP Melinda on Her Journey
Donation protected
Hello everyone, my name is Sianni.
Recently something very unexpected happened. My mom found out she had to get her leg amputated from the knee down. It came as a major shock to her and our family. No doctor had mentioned this could be a possibility until they told her that there was no way she could heal from the damage.
She will be off work for a minimum of 4-6 months while recovering and learning how to live her best life with an amputation. My mom was told by a disability specialist, even with the amputation she does not qualify for disability benefits while she is not working. This whole situation was very unexpected we are all going through a lot of changes and challenges.
It started when she got an infection and we brought her to the hospital and honestly, I believe the first hospital made the infection worse because they didn’t fully recognize what it was and they didn’t treat it properly. The dressings for her wounds were not cared for properly. They sent her home, she still wasn’t feeling good. My mom went to a different hospital where she was told she would need to be admitted again. There they discovered how severe the infection had gotten and determined that she would have to get her leg removed from the knee down.
She was told the care she received at the first hospital is being looked into. Due to the infection being as severe as it was when she was discharged. We are looking at options and will need to hire legal representation to understand how the care could've been better and if it had been she may still have her leg.
It’s heartbreaking seeing my mom go through this. I would have never thought this would happen.
Any donation at all is extremely helpful given the unfortunate circumstances. We appreciate every dollar because it makes a difference.
