Fundraising for Kenya Library Book Project.

Hello lovely people, friends, book lovers and generous givers.

My Name is Rosemary Zahn. I have taken on a huge project that has been my dream in the making for 12 years. I wanted to save left over library books from the dumpster after the yearly book sale in Morden, Manitoba, Canada. These books would otherwise end up in the shredder, then recycling. Ouch! The death of books!! I am a book lover!

I wanted give these books new life. I know of people who would love them greatly, anew. I grew up in Kenya where during my school and college days, students and their parents could not afford to own books. Many still don’t. We would crowd over a book, 5-10 of us. Kids still do. School, community, and city libraries were extremely rare and still are. However, right now, the community I grew up in, in Kenya, is abuzz with the need for books. There is even a huge library being built there and it will need a miracle to fill it. I just visited Kenya in July 2019. Things are coming together, their need and my dream. Amazing synchronicity!

In May 2019, I finally got the courage to tackle my vision. Many volunteers came together to pack these books into a huge, 40 ft trailer .The Morden fire department was instrumental in supporting this project in this way, after their own book sale with more left over books. Now we need $ CA 8, 000 (eight thousand Canadian dollars!) in order to hire a container for shipping and the costs that go with it. Destination, Kenya.

The huge problem is, we have to ship the books by the end of March, 2020.Yes in winter. The trailer holding the books is needed by the owner after that. I would hate to give up the books because we failed to raise enough money. I had hoped to put in place fundraising sales/event in the summer but I had an emergency in Kenya (my loving mom passed away). I spent the whole of July there. This was a major set back for me time wise, mentally and emotionally. Now I am more able to focus on the project but the deadline is fast approaching, that is why I am reaching out on Go Fund Me for help. A friend suggested it to me after she saw how stuck I was. She said, “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are asking for help on behalf of others”.

So much work has gone into the project. So many volunteers (adults and children) have spent their strength and time packing the books. This is my first, crazily huge project. I had to do it or I would lose the opportunity to help my other corner of the world. It is so easy to give up. Please come join us. Book lovers or not. We can do this! Together can save a ton of books from the shredder and bless Kenyan students and communities with readership. How awesome!!  A win-win situation.

Thank you so much in advance.
