Libby Summers, our mother, also known as "Libbylicious" and "Libhotmama" was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, June 14th, 2022 for emergency brain surgery. She suffered a stroke, brain hemorrhage and aneurysm simultaneously, all caused by an AVM (google it). AVMs are rare; hers was only discovered due to this tragic health crisis. She will remain in the Critical Care Neurology ICU for 3 weeks and then be transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation center for approximately 3-4 weeks. Once she returns home she will have daily physical therapy. Her cerebellum was most affected by this, which controls balance, speech, swallowing, vision and fine and gross motor coordination.

 

Her cognition (cerebrum) was not affected, however her life will be different forever. It is a long road to recovery, but we expect her to live many more years with the help of good doctors, family and LOTS of love.

During her hospital stay, her husband John has not left her side and has missed over 3 weeks of work and is expected to miss at least 3 more. Because Libby is retired and John is the main provider bills have already started to pile up which is causing a financial burden and this is just the beginning. Special thanks to our family and Moms friends for already helping us during this time.

 

For the future of Libby's care and recovery the long term goal is to most importantly get her well and then get the house ready to sell and relocate her and John to CA to be closer to us and her family.  To help with this Sarah and Alex will be staying the summer with Libby and John and will be getting everything in order to sell as well as help with daily care. Keturah will be traveling back and forth to help with everything as well.
