[VERSION FRANÇAISE EN BAS DE PAGE] A SURF CLUB IN ROBERTSPORT, LIBERIA ! Robertsport surfers need your help to build their Surf Club! This will facilitate access to surfing, develop the sport, and generate income for the community.


The project: The Liberian government recently offered the surfers of Robertsport, represented by the Grand Cape Mount County Surf Club Association, a plot of land in front of the waves to build a surf club.


This is a great opportunity for them to create a place that will bring surfers together and make surfing more accessible. It is also a way to generate income for the community by developing surf and beach related tourism by offering visitors services such as surf lessons, surfboard rentals, food and drinks.


The Surf Club will be a social, sporting and economic development asset for the village.


Today we are asking for your help to fund its construction. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/56474269_1619772515748152_r.jpeg" alt="56474269_1619772515748152_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> Robertsport and its surf community: Robertsport is a small fishing village located near the northern border of the country, in the Grand Cape Mount County. Like the rest of Liberia, the village has suffered from many years of civil war. Here, surfing is used as a tool for resilience, and is part of the balance of many young people’s lives.


“When I surf I forget about all the problems. It's like there's never been a war or Ebola, like I don't have to worry about money or anything! I’m in the water, I’m free and I’m having a blast!” Says Morris Sherrif, an active member of the surf community. Robertsport is home to some of West Africa's most beautiful surf spots, and has world-class waves breaking pretty often. Unfortunately surfers don’t have the equipment and resources necessary to practice and progress. The lucky ones share the few boards available, which are in very poor condition. If Liberia does not yet have international champions, it is not due to potential but to the lack of means and infrastructure. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/56474269_1619772550598408_r.jpeg" alt="56474269_1619772550598408_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />


The surf club: The Surf Club will be managed as a community based organization, by the members the Grand Cape Mount County Surf Club Association. It will facilitate access to surfing by making surf equipment available to those who wish to use it. The boards and material will be stored and maintained there. It will also be the ideal place to organize surf competitions.


To have fun, evolve and progress, flourish, watch over each other, learn to know the Ocean and to protect it: These are benefits and values that the club members want to share and transmit through the practice of surfing.


The Surf Club will offer tourists the opportunity to take surf lessons, rent equipment, have their boards repaired, or even hire a guide to explore the surrounding surf spots. It will also be possible to eat and even camp there.


These sources of income are essential to the project and its sustainability. The idea, at its core, is to allow the place and the equipment to be maintained independently, then to create jobs within the community by developing the project (construction of bungalows for rent, for example). This is an important first step towards a surf and tourism based economy, which could eventually enable part of the community to meet its needs. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/56474269_1619772804410905_r.jpeg" alt="56474269_1619772804410905_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> The construction: The surf club will be made up of several elements: - Main building (approximately 37m2) which will be used for the storage of boards, retail and rental area as well as space for the repair of boards.  - Sanitary block with showers and toilets (approximately 12m2). - Hut/ shelter to eat and rest while watching the waves, sheltered from the rain or the sun ! - Water tank with rainwater collection system and filtration. - Landscaping will be done so that campers can pitch their tents. They will have access to the sanitary facilities and the rest of the infrastructure present on the site.


In the future, the goal is to build housing to accommodate tourists.

Originally from Canada, Kent has now lived and surfed in Liberia for 14 years. He has been involved in the Robertsport surf community for many years and shows strong and regular support. He is also the executive director of operations for Universal Outreach, an NGO dedicated to providing people with quality educational opportunities such as scholarship, market-driven skills training programs, and entrepreneur mentoring. Through Universal Outreach, Kent will support the development of the Surf Club by overseeing the construction of infrastructure, but also by facilitating access to education and the acquisition of the needed skills to run the project. <a href="http://www.globalc3.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CROSS CULTURAL CARE</a>  Initial financial support to initiate the project has come from Cross Cultural Care a local Robersport, Liberia NGO providing healthcare and education development projects and programs for over a decade. Provide the Slide is a Swiss based NGO that brings surfing equipment to West Africa. Last year, Simon and Chris, the founders, sent over 140 surfboards to Liberia, Senegal and Ghana, including 35 to Robertsport! Another load of boards and gear for Robertsport is in preparation. It will aim to provide the necessary equipment for the club: surfboards, soft tops/beginner boards, leash, fins, wax, and repair equipment.

The establishment of a "Surf Therapy" program in partnership with Waves For Change is currently in discussion. Waves for Change has created a Surf Therapy program for young people living in unstable environment. Robersport et ses surfeurs: Robertsport est un petit village de pêcheur situé à la frontière Nord du pays, dans le Grand Cape Mount County. Comme le reste du Liberia, le village a souffert des nombreuses années de guerre civile. Ici, le surf est utilisé comme exutoire, comme outil de résilience, et fait parti de l’équilibre de nombreux jeunes surfeurs et surfeuses.  « Quand je surf j’oublie tous les problèmes. C’est comme si il n’y avait jamais eu de guerre ou Ébola, comme si je n’avais plus de soucis d’argent ou quoi que ce soit! Je suis dans l’eau, je me sens libre et je m’éclate! » témoigne Morris Sherrif, membre actif de la communauté surf. Robertsport abrite parmi les plus beaux spots d’Afrique de l’Ouest, et des vagues de classe mondiale y déferlent. Malheureusement les surfeurs et surfeuses manquent de matériel et de ressources pour pouvoir pratiquer et progresser. Les plus chanceux se partagent les quelques planches disponibles, souvent en très mauvais état. Si le Liberia ne compte pas encore de champions internationaux ce n’est pas à cause du potentiel local mais bien du manque de moyens et d’infrastructures. Le surf club: Le Surf Club sera géré de manière associative par les membres du Grand Cape Mount County Surf Club Association.  Il permettra de faciliter l’accès à la pratique du surf en mettant à disposition du materiel et en initiant ceux qui le souhaite. Les planches et le matériel y seront entreposés et entretenus. Cela sera également le lieu idéal pour organiser des compétitions de surf ! S’amuser, évoluer et progresser, s’épanouir, veillez les uns sur les autres, apprendre à connaitre l’Ocean et à le protéger: des bienfaits et des valeurs que souhaitent partager et transmettre les membres du club grace à la pratique du surf. Le Surf Club offrira l’opportunité aux touristes de prendre des cours de surf, de louer du matériel et de faire réparer leurs planches, ou encore de faire appel aux services d’un guide pour découvrir les spots de surf environnants. Il sera également possible de s’y restaurer et même d’y camper! Ces sources de revenus sont primordiales au projet et à sa pérennité. L’idée est, dans un premier temps, de permettre d’entretenir le lieu et le matériel de manière indépendante, puis de créer des emplois au sein de la communauté et de développer le projet (construction de bungalows à louer par exemple). C’est un premier pas important vers une économie tournée vers le surf, qui pourrait par la suite permettre à une partie de la communauté de subvenir à ses besoin. La construction: Le surf club sera constitué de plusieurs éléments: - un bâtiment principal (environ 37m2) qui servira en autre à l’entreposage des planches et du materiel ainsi qu’à la réparation de planches. un bloc sanitaire avec douches et WC (environ 12m2) - une hutte / abri pour se restaurer et se reposer en regardant les vagues, l’abri de la pluie ou du soleil! - une cuve / reservoir d’eau surélevée avec système de récupération d’eau de pluie et filtration. - le terrassement du terrain sera effectué de sorte à ce que des campeurs puissent y planter leurs tentes. Ils auront accès aux sanitaires et au restes des infrastructures présentent sur le site. À moyen terme, le but est de construire des logements pour pouvoir accueillir les touristes. Ils sont impliqués dans le développement du Surf Club: <a href="http://www.universaloutreachfoundation.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universal Outreach Foundation</a>  D’origine Canadienne, Kent habite et surf au Liberia depuis maintenant 14 ans. Il est impliqué depuis de nombreuses années dans la communauté surf de Robertsport et y apporte un soutient régulier. Il est aussi directeur des opérations pour Universal Outreach, une ONG qui oeuvre pour l’accès à l’éducation et la professionnalisation, ainsi qu’au développement d’initiatives économiques au Liberia.
