Fire Recovery Fundraiser for Libby and Bill
Donation protected
If you know the Eberle kids and their families, if you know Libby Miller Eberle, if you knew Laura Miller or Bing Miller (lucky you!), then you know about the Cabin in Moody Hollow in the North Georgia mountains. Since 1962, “Creekside” - the house that Bing built as Libby's 16th birthday present - has been a home, a refuge, a getaway, a meeting place, a sanctuary, and so much more, for four generations of our family. The cabin has seen joy and celebration at fish fry’s, parties, reunions, birthdays, and even a wedding. When family members, like little Josh and Bing, have been taken from us too soon, it has been a place to grieve and a place to heal.
It’s been a place where our family, no matter how far apart we are, could feel connected – to each other and to our shared history. The mere thought of the cabin, just knowing it existed, has been a profound solace and comfort for each of us in our darkest hours. The smell of the wood, the deep shade of the trees, the portraits and photos hanging on the wall (some dating back to the 1880's), the ever-present sound of the creek, the mornings waiting silently on the porch for the hummingbirds to come to the feeder…
It is all gone.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 2nd, a fire burned the cabin to the ground. Everything that stood for so long, and meant so much to so many people, has been reduced to a charred heap. All that could be salvaged, was hauled away in the bed of a pick-up truck.
No one was hurt. Thank God. But Libby and Bill have been living in the cabin for ten years, and everything they owned, including irreplaceable family heirlooms, was lost in the fire. We are trying to pick up the pieces and help them figure out what their next chapter will look like: where they will stay, how we can support them, and what their permanent residence will be. Our mom and dad, who have given so much to us, deserve to have a secure and stable home, in a place that is meaningful and fulfilling to them. We’ve got some ideas, but we need your help.
It’s going to cost more than the insurance payout will cover, and more than we can take on, to get them through the immediate and unforeseeable future...
- There was a mortgage on the property which will consume the entire insurance payout. Bill retired 25 years ago and they live on a fixed income.
- Huge structural costs of just clearing away the wreckage include: demolition, hauling debris, grading and leveling the lot and replacing the bridge so all that work can be done. This could add up to upwards of $30,000 to $40,000
- They will need to replace items that can be replaced and restore what few damaged items can be restored.
- Unknown costs of a potentially long-term interim living arrangement
- They hope to REBUILD in Moody Hollow! Whether on the same spot or across the creek, the cost of preparing the lot and constructing a house would be at least $150,000
If you are able, we hope you will consider making a donation to help us support mom and dad. We are hoping to raise $200,000.
We know that’s a lot, but if we can get a strong financial cushion for them now, we’ll be able to get them feeling situated and secure as quickly and comfortably as possible.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any support, financial or otherwise. A donation of any amount will mean the world to them.
