Liam's Journey

This is Liam. He is 16 years old, and began feeling sick two years ago. He was having rib, joint and abdominal pain but everyone thought it was because he was a growing teenager. He grew 15” in one year and now measures 6’5”! In early 2017 he became very sick. After numerous blood tests his family doctor told his Mom that she should take him to the ER at Sick Kids in Toronto. That was the start of numerous trips to the hospital, never ending tests, and flare ups. He was diagnosed with three autoimmune diseases, and liver damage. Treatment began with drugs. First one didn’t work, and then the second one didn’t either. Then the 3rd and 4th immune suppressing drugs did not work either.

Then the conversation turned to surgery and onJune 29th an Ileostomy was done during a seven hour surgery. Life has now changed and it will take time to adjust to the new way of doing things.

Liam has worked hard over the last 2 years, despite not feeling well to help raise money for Sick Kids so they can build a new hospital.  He even took part in a winter race called Polar Rush during a full flare, to raise $3000 for the Sick Kids VS Impossible Campaign.

Liam is one of the most selfless kids we know. Even while he was in the hospital, and in pain, he took time to visit other kids on his floor to encourage them. He didn’t want them to be sad and scared. He also offered to stay in contact with one teen in case she needed someone to talk to who understood what she was going through.

We are asking that you join us to raise some funds to assist with purchasing the supplies he will need to care for himself, allowing him to go to the Ostomy camp for teens next year as well as help his Mom, Dad and Step-Parents catch up from being in the hospital caring for him.  He has been unable to work due to being so sick and the financial burden on his family has been rising as they have had many extended stays at Sick Kids.

Thanks for caring!
