Support Wallace Elementary Class of 2018 Students in Learning Opportunities and Experiences
Traditionally, Wallace Elementary students participate in two incredible field trips,:
-In 4th grade, the students will take a day-trip to Austin to tour the State Capitol and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
-In 5th grade, the students will experience an overnight science field trip to the Outdoor Education program at Sky Ranch, located outside of Tyler, Texas
Participating in these two significant field trips, Wallace students gain learning opportunities and experiences that cannot be replicated in the classroom.
In Austin, the students will tour the State Capitol and its grounds and visitor center as well as a visit to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Students will explore the cultural heritages that contribute to Texas’ past, present, and future. This trip will strengthen concepts of citizenship, economics, and political participation. The experience will encourage them to take an active role in their community and instill in them a responsibility to the voting process. They will see their own roles in Texas history, making them better citizens and community members. The Bullock Museum will show the students that Texas was and is a melting pot of different cultures, just as Lake Highlands is today.
At Sky Ranch , the students will will observe reptiles, mammals and arthropods. They will learn the difference between learned and inherited traits as well as habitats and niches by studying and experimenting in Sky Ranch’s facilities and seeing the way animals live in the East Texas woods. They will learn about soil, gases, and spend two nights in the great outdoors.
As valuable as the program content area activities will be, the field trips will also contribute to social and emotional learning and maturation. Students will have a safe environment to learn and to develop independence in taking care of personal needs and managing themselves. From the bus ride to taking meals together to spending time outside of school with teachers, school staff, and volunteers, the students will deepen friendships, as well as to foster new ones with our diverse school population. Memories from this experience will help them grow in confidence academically and developmentally as they head into the middle school years.
The Wallace Elementary PTA is involved to help raise funds to offset the costs to the students.
-The day trip to Austin costs $47 per student to cover transportation and tour fees.
-The 3-day, 2-night trip costs $170 per student to cover their cabins, meals, transportation and camp staff time.
This amount is cost prohibitive for the majority of the student families in our Title 1 school. On behalf of the Wallace PTA and the students' lives you will forever impact, consider making a contribution to offset the costs of the trip so all Wallace students, Class of 2018, can experience the field trips. We will not allow any child to miss the expereience because of a financial barrier.

Thank you in advance for your generosity in making the educational field trips a possibility for all Wallace Class of 2018 students (currently 4th graders)!
Sincerely,
Wallace Elementary 4th Grade Parents
