Save LGBTQ Refugee Lives - Help Build a Community Home

Donate to help 429 LGBTQ+ refugees establish a safe home for their community in South Sudan! ️‍

Jackson and Malik are two of 429 LGBTQ+ refugees from Uganda, Burundi, the Congo and Rwanda with hundreds of miles behind them as they have searched for a safe haven to let down their roots and take care of each other. The group has children and adults alike, survivors of unimaginable violence looking for a chance to rest in safety.

They relocated from Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to Gorom camp in South Sudan earlier this year, as conditions in Kakuma worsened to a breaking point. Now, the same threatens to happen in Gorom camp, and they’ve been told to leave because of being LGBTQ+.

They continue to be forced to flee from violence.

They’re exhausted and increasingly unsafe, but never alone and never without hope.

Their plan is to rent a fence in Juba, South Sudan, where they can establish a community haven for all 429 refugees (and potentially more). But we will need YOUR help to be able to do it! Every tiny bit makes a difference.

Expenses breakdown:

Rent: ~$2500 USD / month

Food: ~$3000 USD / month

Other costs and emergencies: ~$1000 USD / month

As the very first step, we need to raise $7500 USD so Jackson, Malik and the others can put down 3 months’ rent in advance and move as soon as possible for their safety. Additionally, we’re also raising funds to cover food, medical and other expenses. Our current goal should cover about 3 months of living expenses for the community.

Jackson and Malik have been tirelessly working to keep their community safe and to provide for them. They're some of the most generous and warm-hearted people, and they deserve all the support we can give them so they can continue doing their amazing work.

About the organiser:

I’m Emil (he/e), and I live in Denmark (hence the currency of the fundraiser).

I’ve been in touch with Malik (he/they) for two years and Jackson (she/her) for 6 months. (We decided to use aliases for their safety.) I’ve been supporting them to the best of my ability in that time and we’re in daily contact about the situation in Gorom camp. We’re organising this GoFundMe together, and I’ll be passing on the funds raised here twice a week to Jackson and Malik via Remitly, which they will be using to pay rent and cover food, medical and other costs for the community.
