My name is Ley-Lonni Woodruff and I am currently a senior in the Bachelor’s of Science program for Social Work at Metropolitan State University of Denver. I am proud to say I am a first-generation college student and on the honor roll! As a young woman who has emancipated out of the foster care system, navigating the world has been both exciting and challenging. Along the way, my journey has consisted of a loss of family, friends, community, and at times, my own identity.

I have worked to provide for myself by working 20+ hours per week while also being in school full time since being old enough to do so. Most recently, I accepted a position at the Center for Multicultural Excellence and Inclusion on campus not only to meet my financial needs but to help students of color succeed in college. I also belong to the student advisory board and the Classroom to Career development group. As an emancipated youth, I am also required to attend several volunteer events, classes and groups.

As my story has steadily been progressing, my responsibilities continue to grow.  For the last 4 years, I have relied entirely on public transportation. I am certainly not complaining but am at a place in my life where spending several hours on the bus per day is an insurmountable obstacle to meeting all of my commitments. I predicted a time would come where I would need a vehicle of my own. I have already saved $4000.00! I believe this will also promote my independence which I look forward too. My mentor and her friend, Jim, asked me if I would be comfortable with them creating a go fund me page because they felt some of their friends might be interested in contributing to help me purchase a vehicle that would hopefully have more longevity and not require constant maintenance.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! Lonni

Lonni is the most responsible, positive, resilient, hardworking 20 year old I have ever seen. Unfortunately, in her youth, she was let down time and time again by our ‘systems’. I met her when she was 12 years old when most of her family was falling apart. Despite this, she has never backed down or let anything stop her from achieving anything she sets her mind to. She graduated high school early and is excelling in college. I am so proud of her. She’s never asks for anything from anyone despite deserving more than the cards she has been dealt. She is self-sufficient and responsible. She pays her own bills, navigates a variety of systems, attends college full time, works 20+ hours a week and the list goes on and on. She has done all this on the bus since the age of 15. I can assure you most of us couldn’t accomplish what she has in the last few years at such a young age. She has saved and worked so hard for this. Please consider donating so I can help her purchase her first car so she can continue to meet her obligations and be exposed to a level of freedom she deserves.
