Lexi has the Strive to Survive! Now let's get her back in stride!

On Monday, April 3rd, our beautiful 1 ½-year-old German Shepard “Lexi”, was tragically hit by a speeding car. In a state of lifelessness, she was immediately transported to the nearest emergency vet. They discovered that she had extensive brain trauma and that her lungs were filled with blood and oxygen pockets, which hindered her breathing. Lexi was given less than a 30% chance of survival with her injuries. Our sleepless nights of waiting for the next update were extremely tolling. The first night, one of the next several spent in an oxygen chamber, was focused on reducing the swelling in her brain. With the power of prayer and her willingness to fight, Lexi made it through and was upgraded to a 50% chance of survival. A chest tube was then inserted into her to successfully remove the excess fluids from her lungs. After a couple of days, the brain swelling was gone as well as the fluids in her lungs. With her finally in a stable condition, the doctors were now comfortable addressing the other issues at hand – her inability to stand and to find out if there were any other internal injuries.

Lexi was transported to a Neurology Hospital for further diagnosis with the aid of an MRI. Miraculously there were no broken bones and no damage to any internal organs, however there was serious damage to her spinal cord at the base of her neck at her shoulder blades. Although she could move her front legs, she was paralyzed from there down and was unable to do any more than barely lift her head. A decision had to be made, and we knew what it had to be. She has shown us that she is willing to fight, and we are going to fight alongside her every step of the way. She has also shown us that she is still Lexi beyond all her injuries with her sass and freshness - and is still eager for her next snacky of celery.

On Saturday, April 8th, Lexi underwent spinal surgery to repair her vertebrae in an effort to allow her to walk again. While the surgery was considered successful and there being no guarantees, we are determined to watch her running around as the goofy dog she once was. Shortly after the operation, she was able to lift her head higher than at any point during this trying time.

Mom and Art have been with her watching her fight 100%, and believe she has the fight and drive to walk again. Lexi has overcome the greatest of odds to show us her love for us and to prove that prayer works. She still has a long road to recovery ahead. It will be 4 – 6 weeks just to get better from the surgery and another 6 months of intense therapy to try to get her to walk again.
