28 Sept. UPDATE from Larry - God has been good and each day I gain strength and endurance. But it is so slow. Oct. 12th is a heart Sonogram and EKG; Nov 2nd is a Doppler on my legs and CT Scan on my lungs to determine both my recovery progress and any permanent damage I may have suffered. Thanks to the generosity of so many, all of the medical costs have been paid for up to this point! And although we do now have health insurance - THESE PROCEDURES WILL NOT BE COVERED - so we continue to trust God to provide. Thank you all for your love and concern over these last 2 months - I am grateful to be alive.
For those who don't know, I (Larry) was hospitalized July 21st with a massive pulmonary embolism in my right lung. I started the day assuming I just had a bad chest infection and so asked Natascha (a German daughter) to take me to the doctor. But when I collapsed in her car unable to breathe she rushed me to the ER. My right ventricle was enlarged to twice the normal size as the heart fought the blockage. Natascha's quick thinking, the skill of the ER Docs, and God's miraculous intervention are the reasons I can write to you today.
As I struggled to breathe, I experienced both a fear of death and the peace of knowing God was in control - it was quite a paradox. After 3 days in the ICU, I stabilized and moved to a new station where the doctor greeted me with 'Did you know a 40 yr. old German politician just died from what you have?' Such encouragement! When the head doctor told me how lucky I was - I said 'no God protected me' - he shrugged and changed the subject. My name was known all over the hospital because I was not expected to live - but I was released July 30th - Praise God!
Counting my blessings: My cousin Dora and daughter Stephanie came from Miami to help out at the Library and saved the day since Teri was suddenly on her own. Our Connections volunteers and one of our patrons, a German college student, helped Teri keep the Library open. The hospital was only 1 KM from the house; there were many English speakers on a great staff (hard to speak German when fighting for your life); and a top-notch Cardiologist was with me all the way. God is good!
PROGNOSIS
I am on a blood thinner and wear compression stockings. Right now, I walk each day to help my heart recover and improve my breathing but it is a long, slow road. A heart sonogram in 6 weeks and a CT scan in 3 months will evaluate my progress. We will also learn if the preliminary diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension is accurate - something we are praying is NOT the case!
Our insurance application was rejected so this entire episode will not be covered. Open Door Libraries created this Go Fund Me account to cover our medical costs until a new policy is in place. We know that God will provide and we have two new insurance applications pending.
So what's next? The work in the Library is not finished. The Berliners have encouraged us not to give up. The fact that I got sick here in Germany actually saved us from financial ruin. Both Teri and I have health issues that need prayer, but this experience reminds us that life is short - and Berlin is still full of hopelessly lost souls. So what else can we do? We are taking the month of August to rest, recuperate, and do much needed repairs and improvements to the library.
In the meantime we pray for wisdom and rely on His grace, mercy and provision.
Thank you so much for your prayers and finacial support!
