Lewis Family Recovery Fund

On Sunday, December 9, 2018, the Lewis family was driving south on I-25 near Larkspur, Colorado.  Traffic was slowing down to a near stop.  A minivan behind the Lewis family wasn’t paying attention and rear ended their car at a high speed. This caused Chad and Lisa’s car to turn, go into the other lane, and they were then t-boned by a semi-truck on the passenger side (Lisa and Gavin’s side). The semi pushed them into a ravine where they hit some trees and came to an abrupt stop. The paramedics had to use the Jaws of Life to get Lisa and Gavin out of the car. They have a long recovery ahead of them, but very much feel that they were watched over and protected by Heavenly Father. In Lisa’s words, “It’s hard not to see the miracle.”

Morgan, Chad, Lisa, and Ryan were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Colorado Springs.  Morgan and Chad were discharged from the hospital Sunday night. Morgan had abrasions from the airbag and bruises from the seatbelt.  Chad has a dislocated elbow.

Ryan has a broken clavicle that required surgery. He also had a partially collapsed lung caused by a pneumothorax. Ryan put his left arm in front of Morgan when the accident happened, and most of his injuries are from protecting his sister. Ryan spent 6 days in the hospital.

Lisa had an open fracture on her right ankle and broken bones in the right foot. She had surgery to reduce the fracture.  Her ankle will be in a cast for about 6 weeks.  Lisa’s left knee is dislocated. Most of the tendons and ligaments in the joint are torn so the joint is extremely unstable. She has to wear an external fixator to hold the joint in place. Nerves in her left leg were damagedcausing drop foot and she is unable to feel her toes. When the swelling goes down on her knee in a few weeks, they will be able to determine how to fix her knee.  She is not able to bear any weight on either leg and will be in a wheelchair for 4-8 weeks after she gets out of the hospital. After being released from the hospital, she will be in a rehab facility for several weeks prior to being able to return home.  She also has fractures to her L2 and L3 vertebrae, which will not require surgery. Lisa suffered a severe concussion which has been causing double vision.

Gavin was life flighted to a hospital in Denver. His jaw was broken in two places. He has an abrasion on his lung. He also has multiple rib fractures and a pelvic fracture. He has two small brain bleeds and a bruise on his brain.  He was diagnosed with a significant traumatic brain injury.  He has only been able to communicate a few words verbally since the accident.  Gavin will probably be in the hospital for several weeks and then may have more physical therapy following his release.

In summary, the entire family will be in physical and emotional recovery for months to years. Funding the Lewis family will go to income replacement, legal fees, insurance short fall, and a variety of unknown expenses.
