Hi everyone,
Our family is heartbroken as we prepare to say goodbye to my dad, Lewis “Blake” Hughes — the man, the myth, the legend — after a devastating stroke.
My father left this world in the most peaceful way. I was by his side the entire time, and he was never in pain. He was surrounded by love, and somehow, even in the end, he had a smile on his face.
He leaves behind the love of his life, Darlene Hughes, an incredible father to his daughters, and six siblings — siblings he protected, looked after, and loved fiercely throughout his life. To them, Blake was more than a brother. He was their protector, their steady presence, the one who showed up without being asked and stood between them and the world whenever it mattered. He was the one who stood up for others, the one who made people feel safe, and the one who left an impression wherever he went. My dad loved life deeply. He loved his wife with his whole heart. He loved his daughters endlessly. He loved his friends, nature, gardening, fishing, good food, good conversation, and making people laugh. He had a way of turning ordinary moments into memories and strangers into friends.
You either loved him or you didn’t quite know what to do with him — but either way, Blake was always having a good time, and somehow he pulled you into it with him.
We are able to handle the funeral expenses, but so many people have reached out asking how they can help and how they can honor my dad. At their request, we’ve set this up as a way for anyone who would like to contribute toward his funeral and memorial arrangements.
We plan to bury him on family land so he can continue gardening forever, surrounded by the earth he loved. In addition, part of these funds will go toward placing memorial benches in a few of his favorite everyday spots, pending approval, so he can always do his favorite things — people-watching, talking with everyone who passes by, and stirring the pot just a little.
We plan to hold a memorial gathering to celebrate his life when the time feels right for our family. Any additional funds will be used to support future arrangements needed to honor his wishes and keep him where he belongs.
Please know there is absolutely no obligation. Your prayers, shared memories, and love mean just as much to our family.
In lieu of flowers or food, we ask that you consider contributing here to help us lay my Daddy ,Blake, to rest in the simple, natural way he wanted.
Thank you for loving my dad the way he loved so many.
