Levels The Play 2023 Toronto Fringe Festival

Hi there! Bonjour! Sak pase!

We are CJ & Abby, a pair of young Toronto creatives representing Capital Sound Collective. We are beyond excited to bring our brand new play with music, Levels the Play, to the 2023 Toronto Fringe Festival.

Our show will run July 5th-16th at the Native Earth Aki Studio, located in Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas St E #250, Toronto, ON M5A 2B7.

Our Story

Our story starts in the fall of 2022. Abby attended a high school production of Mamma Mia! that one of her drama program students was featured in. Inspired by the passion and dedication of the students, she brought the idea of writing a teenage dramedy to the incredibly talented CJ, who was starring in Canadian Stage’s Choir Boy at the time.

Together, they began crafting a story of adolescent artistry, healing, and community. Our 6 characters, Izzy, Cyrus, Zoe, Bre, JP and Chris all navigate the complexities of adolescence, overcoming sexual assault, Queerness, relationships, race and intersectionality, bonded by their shared love of performing.

Our production is completely self-produced, including the play itself which was written by CJ & Abby. This includes our script, and all of our music and lyrics, most of which CJ has produced.

Our goal is to bring teenage realness to the stage. And we are looking to you to help us bring our show to life!

Your generous donations will help us with:

  • Fringe Festival Fees
  • Marketing Costs
  • Production Costs
  • Costumes, sets, and props
  • Print materials
  • Music Production (Mixing, mastering, sound engineering)
  • Providing fair compensation to our dedicated artists

Your gift ensures Capital Sound Collective can provide opportunities for young Canadian artists to innovate storytelling. Together, we are building a community of diverse voices who are passionate about changing the hearts of our audiences.

When you give to Levels the Play, you celebrate theatre and invest in creativity.

Our Play

Levels the Play explores the lives of six high school drama students over the course of their final year. After the sweet, shy, creative Izzy is sexually assaulted at a party, she is propelled into a journey of healing and finding her voice. Through truthful comedy and moments of tenderness, Levels the Play honestly investigates and reveals the lives of Toronto youth today.

Our show is captivating for all audiences, and will be especially impactful for high school students, the LGBTQ+ community, the Black community, people who have been impacted by sexual assault, and to folks who are familiar with the Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance. We are incredibly grateful for the chance to champion many diverse lived experiences with our story. We believe in the importance of this show, and the significance of seeing real people represented onstage.
