Let's Support Larry to Find Safe Housing

I met my neighbor Larry and his dog Walter a couple years ago. I saw them outside and noticed Larry was crying. I asked if he was OK and he shared with me that he and his wife had just moved in with her sister and that a couple days after their move, his wife died unexpectedly. He was feeling sad and lost. From there we became friends and I have been trying to help Larry ever since.

Larry is 76 years old, he served as a Marine for 17 years. He lives on a very low income of $970/month. Living with his sister-in-law is unpredictable and due to verbal aggression and controlling behavior Larry often feels unsafe. Larry does not have any family to lean on.

I have been helping Larry search for subsidized housing. After many hours of research and networking, the stark reality is awful. Oregon has a severe housing crisis and it's a complicated process to navigate. The reality is a 2-5 year wait for most every list we put Larry on. Veteran services are generally very poor and even for veterans, housing is not readily available.

In April 2025 Larry broke his hip. Walter came to live with us. Larry had surgery and was in rehab for 4 weeks. He met with social workers while in rehab and despite being told they would help him find safe housing, nothing ever happened.

Larry had to move back in with his sister-in-law who had moved to a new apartment while he was in rehab. This new apartment is accessed by 15 outside stairs which are difficult for Larry to navigate. He feels stuck. Walter is still living with us.

I am hoping to raise enough funds so that Larry can meet minimum requirements for long-term affordable housing. Additionally, funds will be used for basic necessities of daily living. Whenever Larry does find housing he will need some funds to get started in a new home.

Larry is a very kind, caring man. He is working so hard to keep going.
