Hello friends!
I am a hairdresser in NYC and 12 years ago I had the privilege of living and teaching English in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. While I was there, I befriended one of my students, Witness Hussein Mkokoya. By the end of the year, we were fast friends and I wanted to continue to support her education once I was back in the States...
Through many expensive calls to Tanzania and a mixture of broken English and Kiswahili (and one very patient elder to help translate), Wit's mother, (who also happens to be a hairdresser,) and I found a great school for her to attend.
Fast forward all these years and she graduated high school with flying colors this past spring. I'm so proud of her because most people in Tanzania don't get that far and ESPECIALLY as a woman.
What's even more exciting is that she has applied and has been accepted to Kigamboni City College of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar Es Salam, Tanzania. In other words, our little lady is moving to "the big city" for school.
She will be majoring in Physiotherapy .... which will allow her to learn and eventually practice as therapist that will help with health, mobility and well being. She wants to learn about managing pain, balance and motor function for those struggling with pregnancy, age disability or illness. My heart is so full of pride and excitement for her, I cannot wait for her to move on to this next chapter in her life....
Now- paying $600 dollars a year for grade and high school was doable for me. $4,000 dollars a years is a little tough.... So I thought I would reach out to all of you for a little assistance. It takes a village, right? Witi is a smart, motivated student and, I can't emphasize this enough, in very little company as a woman going to college in her country. She has a fire and life force in her that will let her be successful in anything she does.
Please consider making a donation to help me cover the cost of her schooling. It would mean the world to me, but it would mean an amazing life for her and generations to come in her family.
With all my love,
Sarah Rappolt, proud "auntie"
