Ogni mattina, all'alba, Dolma appare al portone.
I met Dolma in the mountains of Nepal, at various altitudes, near a monastic school where I teach as an anthropology researcher.
Every morning at dawn, Dolma appears at the gate. She follows us down the entire steep mountain path, me and my students. She boards the local bus, curling at our feet. She waits in the courtyard for eight hours, motionless and patient. She closes her eyes when she hears the mantras. Then she takes the bus back with us, climbs the mountain again in the cold evening, and stops at the gate that would normally remain closed to her.
Dolma has chosen to protect us every day without asking for anything in return. No food, no water, no shelter. Just her faithful, silent presence.
But Dolma lives in a place where leopards descend from the mountains. Other stray dogs have been devoured in recent weeks. Village people often hit her with sticks for no reason. Several times I've had to beg passersby and farmers to stop. Her only fault is being a dog.
I had her vaccinated and spayed with my savings. But soon I must leave Nepal to return to Italy, and I cannot abandon her to certain death.
The plan is to bring her with me.
But bringing a dog from Nepal to Europe is complex and expensive. It requires the rabies titer test, international health certificates, a pet passport, and air transport. I need approximately two thousand five hundred euros to cover everything: safe boarding, complete vaccinations and tests, air transport, and a margin for emergencies.
I'm a university student working on my thesis. I'm writing my dissertation, taking exams, my life is precarious like any student's. I hadn't planned to get a dog. But Dolma didn't choose me randomly. She chose to protect us every day, to wait for hours, to give us her unconditional loyalty. She deserves to live. She deserves a chance.
Even a few euros make a difference and can bring Dolma closer to the flight that will save her.
If you cannot donate, sharing this story is equally precious. The more people who see it, the better Dolma's chances.
Dolma spent months protecting students who had nothing to offer her. Now it's our turn to protect her.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
