Today is my birthday and I have only one wish - to save the life of my soul dog Buddy
Well, Buddy's not just a dog - he's my world.
8 years ago today I got Buddy in the Philippines from a local policeman for my birthday and adopted him directly. He was no more than 4 weeks old, his mother was a street dog and had no milk.
I lovingly nursed Buddy up. At that time I stayed 7 months longer in the Philippines for him, so that he could travel to Germany with me.
Many people around the world were so touched by our story that they also saved a street dog. So not only did this save Buddy, but many more dogs as well.
It was more than difficult at the time, but I did everything to save this dog.
Buddy was the first street dog to enter Germany from the Philippines. Thus a role model and pioneer for the Philippine animal protection.
Buddy was recently diagnosed with mitral valve disease which has caused his heart to enlarge.
Our cardiologist gave Buddy maybe 9 months to live.
In those 9 months, his mitral valve, which acts as the valve that allows blood to flow to the heart, will stop working.
When the mitral valve stops working, the abnormal blood flow starts sending fluid to his lungs. When his lungs fill with enough liquid, he drowns and he will suffer complete heart failure.
But there is a specialized operation that not only has an 85-90% success rate, it will add years and years to his life.
Dr. Masami Uechi, a veterinary cardiologist from Japan, invented and perfected this open heart surgical technique.
Basically, they stop his heart, reshape the enlargement, and repair his mitral valve.
With this operation, Buddy will be able to lead an active, playful life for many more years without any restrictions.
The disadvantage is that this operation is so specialized that it is not even offered in Germany.
Dr. Uechi taught these operations to a cardiology veterinary team in France, at the Hopia veterinary clinic.
Because the operation is so specialized, it is also very expensive. The costs are around €25,000.
For such cases I have an operation insurance for Buddy. In December, they promised me they would cover the costs up to a maximum of 3 times the rate of a veterinary clinic. So I was sure that most of the costs were covered.
But because this operation is not performed in Germany and is so special, his insurance only covers €1,717 - I only found out about that this Monday, so found out 5 days ago.
I have been organizing everything necessary for over 2 months to have Buddy operate as quickly as possible.
As you can imagine, all the special investigations have been very expensive so far. I am single and unfortunately my savings, Christmas bonus etc. have been used up with the previous vet costs.
Buddy's case has been reviewed by the surgical team and his case can most likely be accepted for surgery at the end of April/May.
However, we need your help. We're running out of time.

The rescue, transportation, and living with Buddy have given my life new meaning. Not only that I'm really happy with him by my side. Since the struggle to bring him to Germany, during which we sometimes had to live in the slums, I have been very committed to animal welfare, helping the children in the slums and inspiring many other people to do the same.
