Putting your life together after a disaster isn’t just a matter of sorting out the practical matters. I mean, of course the practical has to be dealt with – reconnecting water and electricity, replacing ruined household appliances, restocking with food, clothes and household products. Of course that has to be done.

But then there are the things that matter emotionally too, and they matter at least as much.

Poner orden en la vida tras una catástrofe no es sólo una cuestión práctica. Bueno, claro que hay que ocuparse de los aspectos prácticos: volver a conectar el agua y la electricidad, sustituir los electrodomésticos averiados, reponer alimentos, ropa y productos domésticos. Por supuesto que hay que hacerlo.

Pero también están los aspectos emocionales, que son igual de importantes.

I'm David Beeson and I live in the Spanish province of Valencia but fortunately in an area not affected by the recent terrible floods. Two close friends of ours, however, Celia and Paco, live in Paiporta which was one of the worst hit. With many other friends, with some of the thousands of volunteers who poured in, with the army and fire service, we've given them some help in trying to get back to something more like normal life.

Soy David Beeson y vivo en la provincia de Valencia, pero afortunadamente en una zona no afectada por las terribles inundaciones recientes. Sin embargo, dos de nuestros amigos, Celia y Paco, viven en Paiporta, una de las zonas más dañadas. Con otros amigos, con algunos de los miles de voluntarios que colaboraron, con el ejército y los bomberos, les hemos prestado ayuda para intentar volver a algo parecido a la vida normal.

One of the valued possessions of theirs damaged in the flooding was the trunk they inherited from Paco’s great-grandfather. It’s actually far older than that. And it’s in a bad way.

Una de sus preciadas posesiones dañadas en la inundación fue el baúl que heredaron del bisabuelo de Paco. En realidad es mucho más antiguo. Y está en mal estado.

Now I'm trying to raise funds to cover the cost of repairing it which, the restorer who has it tells us, will be about 600 euros. Every penny raised will go to the repairs. If there's any money left over, we'll use it to help repair or replace other possessions they've lost. None of the money will go to anyone or anything else.

Ahora estoy intentando recaudar fondos para cubrir el coste de su reparación, que el restaurador que lo tiene nos ha dicho que rondará los 600 euros. Cada céntimo recaudado se destinará a la reparación. Si sobra dinero, lo utilizaremos para ayudar a reparar o reponer otras pertenencias que se hayan perdido. Nadie más recibirá el dinero y no se gastará en nada distinto.
