Help Create Kindrly: A Free App Teaching Kids Kindness Through Daily Adventures

Kids today have the biggest hearts in the world. They worry about polar bears, dream of saving our beautiful earth, and genuinely want to help make everything better. But here's what breaks my heart as a mom—they're growing up in digital spaces that simply weren't designed for their pure, caring souls.

Right now, 70% of teens are seeing real violence on social media, and AI is being used to create fake, harmful content that even adults struggle to identify. Kids are being exposed to things that would have been unimaginable when we were growing up, and often there's no trusted adult nearby to help them process what they're seeing.

What if there was a little fox friend who could create a genuinely safe space for kids to learn kindness, somewhere they could explore empathy without stumbling into content that scares or confuses them?

I want to get Kindrly into kids' hands by spring 2026, and honestly, I think about this every single day. Here's the reality: traditional children's websites are mostly gone, so kids are ending up on platforms that weren't built for them like TikTok, Instagram, even Reddit. These platforms use algorithms that can quickly lead children down rabbit holes to content that's completely inappropriate for their age.

With children's screen time averaging over 7 hours daily, every month we delay is another month kids are consuming content that teaches them the wrong lessons about how to treat each other.

And now with AI technology, it's gotten even scarier. Predators are using AI to create fake profiles that look like other children, and harmful content can be generated faster than ever before. The UK just became the first country to make AI-generated child abuse material illegal because the problem has gotten so serious.

You know how quickly kids grow up, right? Those magical years between 5 and 8 when they still believe in everything and want to save the world, that's our window. I hear kids asking questions about why people are mean to each other online, and I realize we can't wait until they're teenagers to give them positive digital experiences.

Every month I spend developing this is another month some kid somewhere is navigating the internet without a safe, age-appropriate space to learn about kindness.

So this happened a few months ago, and it honestly still keeps me up at night. I was out on my balcony in Malmö, Sweden, enjoying my morning coffee, when I heard voices from the courtyard below. At first, I thought it was a group of teenagers arguing. The language was so harsh, so full of anger and cruelty. Words that made my skin curl. I was about to go inside when curiosity got the better of me.

I leaned over the railing and my heart just... dropped. These weren't teenagers. They were tiny kids, maybe 6 or 7 years old, talking to each other like they were angry adults in a bar fight. The words coming out of their little mouths... I can't even repeat some of it. They were bullying each other with a viciousness that felt completely wrong coming from children who should still believe in fairy tales.

I thought maybe this was just one bad group of kids, but then I started hearing the same stories everywhere. My friend who teaches first grade told me she's dealing with language and behavior from 6-year-olds that she's never encountered in her 10 year career. Another mom shared how her sweet daughter came home crying because classmates were using words so cruel she didn't even know what they meant.

But here's what really got to me: Later that same day, I was scrolling through my social media feed and saw a post from another parent dealing with the exact same thing. One mom shared how her 7 year old came home using language she'd never heard before, turns out it was from a "kids" video that had slipped past YouTube's filters. Another parent posted about finding her 6 year old watching something completely inappropriate that had been recommended by the algorithm after she'd been watching innocent cartoons.

The comments section was heartbreaking, parents saying "This happened to us too" and "I don't know how to protect them anymore." I realized these kids are being exposed to the absolute worst of human behavior online and in media, but they don't have easily accessible spaces to learn about the best of human behavior.

That whole day was like a wake-up call hitting me from every direction. First those harsh voices from my balcony, then my friend's stories about her classroom, and finally seeing all of those parents online sharing the same struggles. I went inside that evening feeling overwhelmed. Everywhere I looked, kids were being surrounded by anger, cruelty, and inappropriate content, both online and offline.
I kept thinking: what if kids had a friend who could show them a different way? Not a platform where harmful content might pop up at any moment, but a genuine safe haven where they could learn that kindness is actually cooler than cruelty, that helping others feels better than hurting them.

Those voices from my balcony became Lumi's mission. Because every kid deserves to discover that their natural goodness is more powerful than all the anger they're seeing around them. And every kid deserves a digital space where kindness is the norm, not the exception.
