In Joans words
I was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer that’s spread from my lungs to my stomach & my brain and I’ve been given a very short timeline to survive so I’ve probably already died by the time you’ve read this - womp womp - better luck next time - so my advocacy ends here -
Good evening, everyone. My name is Angelina and I'm here tonight to tell you about an extraordinary Halifax woman who has touched my life and the lives of countless others. Her name is Joan Sinden.
Joan is not just a Halifax citizen – she's a beacon of compassion in your community. For years, she has been a tireless advocate for animals, especially dogs, using her voice online to fight for those who cannot speak for themselves. Her research and advocacy work have made a real difference in the lives of countless animals.
But today, Joan is fighting the biggest battle of her life. She's courageously facing stage four cancer that began in her lungs and has now spread to her brain and bones. Despite being in tremendous pain and having exhausted all treatment options, Joan's spirit remains unbroken.
Like many of us, Joan has a bucket list – simple dreams she's carried in her heart. At the top of that list is something beautifully modest: a night or two in a nice Halifax hotel, with room service, and the luxury of soaking in a hot tub. It's not a trip around the world or an expensive adventure – it's the comfort and dignity of being pampered for just a few days, with her dear friend by her side to help with her needs.
Time is precious for Joan. She's applied for MAID and doesn't have long with us. But there are still moments when, after her steroid injections, she finds a little appetite returns and her pain lessens slightly. These are the windows when she could truly enjoy this simple wish.
We've started a fund that's nearly reached $1,000, but we need your help to make this dream a reality – to give Joan not just one night, but two days of comfort, maybe even a massage or special meals that could bring her joy in these final moments .
This is where Halifax can show what community truly means. Joan has given so much of herself advocating for the vulnerable. Now she needs us to advocate for her.
Whether you can contribute $1, 10 or $100, whether you know of a hotel that might offer a compassionate discount, or whether you simply share Joan's story with others – every action matters.
Joan has spent her life caring for others. Tonight, let's show her that Halifax cares for her too.
When Joan takes that soak in the hot tub, when she enjoys room service without worrying about the cost, when she feels pampered and cared for in her final days – she'll know that this community saw her, valued her, and made sure her last wish became reality.
That's the Halifax I know you are. That's the compassion Joan deserves.
Thank you for listening, and thank you for whatever you can do to help make Joan's final wish come true.
