It is with heavy hearts that we announce, in the midst of this ongoing COVID pandemic, the passing of “Mr. Toad” - Michael Monk, owner of The Toad in the Hole Pub for over 17 years, after a long and arduous year battling lung, bone, and brain cancer.

 

Michael’s plan had always been to finish the much-needed repairs to the new Toad building, but COVID and illness deterred his best laid plans. Michael put his heart and soul into the design and construction of the new Toad location at 155 Osborne St. in Winnipeg and his family would like to continue his legacy.

Tragically, the new Toad was only open for one day before COVID shut the city down, including The Toad. In fact, it was only open for three months in 2020, and closed repeatedly in 2021, causing much financial hardship.

 

One year ago (January 3, 2021), and only two weeks after his father’s death from lung cancer, in addition to the stresses of dealing with COVID, Michael received his terminal diagnosis. Though Michael fought to the end, The Toad in the Hole and the Toad family have clearly endured many hardships, and the challenges are not yet over. To remain open and continue to operate, The Toad needs major repairs, including a new heating system (HVAC) and roof.

 

With Michael’s death, many, many friends, supporters, customers and business partners have asked, “What can I do?” This is it! We would like to give everyone the opportunity to help out The Toad, and Michael’s family, in the same way Michael so generously gave to others his entire life. In keeping with the barn-raising Prairie tradition of communities coming together to support one another, this is an opportunity to rally.

 

Let’s help keep Michael’s memory alive by helping The Toad succeed. Let’s ensure this iconic Winnipeg establishment can continue to serve Michael’s beloved customers, and offer his signature friendly, warm, and inviting welcome to regulars and new found friends alike. Together, let’s make his dream fly!

Fundraising Details:

The roof and heating system are over 30 years old and have outlived their expected lifespan. The cost of these major repairs will be over $150,000. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for these repairs.
