Dear friends and community,

 

I recently learned that my friend in Venezuela, Yenni Aliendo, has been diagnosed with uterine cancer (also known as endometrial cancer). She is experiencing extensive bleeding and has had a blood transfusion. The specialists have recommended she undergo chemotherapy followed by a complete hysterectomy (uterus removal). She needs to start this treatment as soon as possible, but she cannot afford it.  (Update: 15April2022.  Yenni's oncologist recently changed the recommended treatment to radiation and chemotherapy, with surgery now being deemed too risky.)

 

Yenni has a special place in my heart, as she was my next-door neighbour when I was growing up, and I spent a lot of time at her house playing with her and her siblings. She is the youngest in her family and was one of the first babies I held and played with. I have great memories of our families sharing good times.

 

Yenni is 41 years old and lives in Aguirre, the small village where I grew up in Venezuela, with her two sons, Johnny (10) and Enrique (17). She is a loving and dedicated single mother, the sole breadwinner in her house, where she works as a talented seamstress. She also makes and sells meals to help sustain her family. However, what she earns is not enough to cover her medical treatments. In Venezuela, the public health system has deteriorated to the point that patients need to cover their own cancer treatment and all material required for medical procedures. Private care is extremely expensive.

 

While her family and close friends in the community are trying to help her, the poor economy and hyperinflation in Venezuela limit their efforts. So I want to try to help her from afar. I cannot help but think of the fear felt by Yenni's sons of the possibility of losing their mother, and I know that in her fragile state, she fears for the future of her family if she does not get the treatment she needs.

 

That's how this initiative was born. I want to help her and give her hope that there will be a future for her and her children who need her so much. I want her to feel that the world cares about her and that she is not alone, because she is not.

 

So I humbly reach out to you, my friends and community. I ask you to join me in donating and spreading this message to help Yenni and her family fight cancer. Together we can make a difference in their lives.

 

All funds raised for Yenni will be used to offset expenses for her radiation and chemotherapy treatment.

Queridos amigos,

 

Hace poco supe que mi amiga en Venezuela, Yenni Aliendo, fue diagnosticada con cáncer uterino (tambien conocido como cáncer del endometrio). Uno de sus sintomas es sangramiento continuo y ya ha tenido una transfusion de sangre. Los especialistas le recomiendan tomar tratamiento de quimioterapia seguido de una histerectomia (quitar el útero completamente). Ella necesita comenzar tratamiento tan pronto como sea posible, pero no tiene recursos para costearlo.  (Actualización: 15Abril2022. El oncólogo de Yenni recientemente cambió el tratamiento recomendado a radiación y quimioterapia, sin cirugía por considerarla riesgosa).

 

Yenni es una chica muy especial para mí porque cuando yo era niña, ella era mi vecina del lado y yo pasé mucho tiempo en su casa jugando con ella y sus hermanos. Ella es la menor de cuatro hermanos, y fué uno de los primeros bebés a la que pude cargar y con quien pude jugar. Tengo muy gratas memorias de nuestras familias compartiendo buenos tiempos.

 

A sus 41 años, Yenni vive en Aguirre, el pueblo donde crecí en Venezuela, con sus dos hijos, Johnny (10) and Enrique (17). Ella es una madre soltera muy amorosa y dedicada, la única que trabaja y aporta a su familia, y es una talentosa costurera. Ella también prepara y vende comida para ayudar a su familia. No obstante, lo que ella gana no es suficiente para cubrir sus gastos médicos. En Venezuela el sistema de salud público se ha deteriorado a tal punto que los pacientes deben proveer y pagar su propio tratamiento para el cáncer y todo material requerido para tratamiento médico. La medicina privada es sumamente costosa.

 

Aún cuando su familia y amigos en la comunidad hacen todo lo posible por ayudarla, la precaria economía y la hiperinflación en Venezuela limitan sus esfuerzos. Yo quiero tratar de ayudarla desde lejos. Como madre que ha perdido varios amigos por cáncer, no puedo evitar pensar en el temor que sienten los hijos de Yenni ante la posibilidad de perder a su madre, y yo sé que en su frágil estado de salud, ella teme por el futuro de su familia si ella no recibe el tratamiento que necesita.

 

Así es como nace esta iniciativa. Con mi deseo de ayudarla, de darle la esperanza de que sí hay un futuro para ella y sus hijos que tanto la necesitan. Yo quiero que ella sienta que el mundo está de su lado, y que no está sola, porque ella en verdad no está sola.

 

Así es que hoy les hago un humilde llamado a ustedes, mis amigos y mi comunidad. Te pido que te unas a mi donando y compartiendo este mensaje para ayudar a Yenni y su familia a luchar contra el cáncer. Juntos podemos hacer una diferencia en sus vidas.
