Update 3/7/2012 12:00 pm: Leslie, Laura, Sam, and Ron’s family thank you all for your support, thoughts, and prayers. It is comforting to know how many people love and care for Ron and how he has touched so many lives.
Ron was brought to the hospital yesterday. We will keep you posted when there are new updates. xo
Our dear friend Ron Carreiro, or Ronnie, depending on where along the way you came to know him, has been fighting the effects of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) for about a year now, and the disease has progressed with merciless speed.
Our beloved Ron is being cared for by a dedicated and loving circle of family and friends, and they are fighting determinedly to keep Ron at home. The level of care he requires at this point is overwhelming their ability to accomplish this.
Ronnie’s symptoms have progressed to the point where he needs extensive assistance for every aspect of his daily life. Heartbreakingly, he has lost most of his ability to communicate verbally and we are anxiously awaiting a Speech Generating Device, which is covered, as most of the adaptive aids have been, through insurance, grants, and/or the incredible generosity of CCALS (Compassionate Care ALS in Falmouth, MA).
We all know Ron. He is warm, kind, and generous, with a great sense of humor who most enjoys spending time with his family and friends, whether on his boat, or hosting the annual 4th of July Bash on Hope Street. He loves being a father and a beacon to his adored children, Laura and Sam. He loves being a teacher and talks about his students and fellow teachers with pride and adoration. Moreover, how many of us have had Ron show up when we needed anything at all, from moving furniture, fixing a lawnmower, building or constructing anything, or just to lend an ear to lift your spirit.
Ron has been resistant about his friends creating a fundraising platform, but we all know he would be the first to suggest the same for any of us in this situation.
Regrettably, care at home by certified home health aides is not covered by insurance. All funds will be used to hire additional in-home nursing, and help his caregivers manage his care effectively. Now is the time we can all come together for Ron. This is something we can do to help ease the anxiety created by mounting care expenses.
Your generosity is so greatly appreciated as you contribute to the care and comfort of our amazing friend, Ron. Thank you.
