Netta has spent her life giving to others — through her work in community radio, podcasting, storytelling and grassroots advocacy that lifts marginalised voices and builds connections. Now, this remarkable single mum of three needs our support.
A few months ago, Netta was diagnosed with aggressive Stage 3C invasive lobular breast cancer — a form often missed by standard screening. Despite years of mammograms and ultrasounds, the cancer went undetected until a biopsy and MRI revealed the scary truth.
Netta has already endured a mastectomy and lymph node clearance, and has now started a long, difficult year of chemotherapy, radiation, hormone and targeted therapy, and eventual reconstruction.
While she faces this enormous battle, she is also managing life as a single mum to her three awesome kids; trying to keep things as normal as possible for them throughout this upheaval.
Netta has had to give up full-time work and is trying to work a couple of days a week between hospital appointments and procedures, but it's a challenge as the treatment makes her feel so sick and weak. This is leaving her and her family in real financial distress.
This fundraiser will help cover the essentials: household bills, groceries, transport and ongoing costs during her treatment and recovery that will take about 12 months and estimated to cost around $42,000. It will also allow her to just focus on getting better.
Anyone who knows Netta knows her strength, humour, and compassion — even now, she’s still lifting others up with her wit and courage. But she needs our support more than ever to get through this year of treatment and healing.
Your donation, no matter the size, will help give her space to rest, recover, and return to the work she loves — advocating and telling stories that shine a light on marginalised folks like domestic and family violence survivors, single mums, migrants and refugees, and First Nations communities.
After she kicks cancer, Netta will start her PhD at Griffith University, as part of the Voice and Belonging project, adding richness to our collective knowledge. She'll also continue creating her podcast Lioness Heart shining a light on badass women of colour, telling stories through The Wire and Fair Comment on multicultural community Radio 4EB, and continuing her volunteer work with charities Single Mother Families Australia, Broken to Brilliant, National Council of Women Queensland and as a Justice of the Peace in the community.
Please share this page, donate if you can, and send your love and positivity to Netta and her kids.
“It’s just a shitty hurdle I want to get over,” she says. “But I’ll get there — because of my friends, my family, and this incredible community.”
