Let’s help my grandma walk again!
EN
This is my grandma Yolanda. She is 72 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer 25 years ago. By the grace of god she was able to win the battle, but due to the harsh treatments, specifically radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the head of her left femur wore out, and she had to have a hip transplant. Thanks to this surgery she was able to keep her active lifestyle as if was before, and it allowed her to do what she has always liked such as walking, dancing, and being independent. She is known for being a very happy and charismatic person. Halfway through 2019 she started to feel very strong pains in her right hip, and this slowly started to affect her walking and ultimately took away her active life style she has always been used to. Walking is very important for her as she does not have a car in Caracas and walking is the only means of transportation she has, especially through this pandemic (public transport such as buses and taxis are very unsafe even when during a pandemic) Not only that, she lives on the 28th floor of a building in which the elevators seldom work, causing her to walk up and down 28 flights of stairs. This is not a luxury building as you would think in the US, as most apartments buildings in Caracas are tall, old, and falling into disrepair. This time she was diagnosed with bone loss in her right femur and the final diagnosis was degenerative changes in her right hip. Now she has to have a transplant for her right hip, and because of the current economic crisis in venezuela right now, it has become practically impossible for us to pay for the prosthesis, the surgery costs, and the treatments post surgery. Currently in Venezuela the healthcare situation is so bad, that everyone asks for cash (dollars only) upfront and don’t accept their local currency because it virtually worthless. They also won’t accept US credit cards, or we would have taken that option. They want cash in their hands. With this cash the doctors have to purchase all the materials needed for the exam (such as masks, gloves, tools, etc). Materials are so scarce there that you must purchase all your materials needed for the doctors to perform the surgery. This is why today we are asking for your help so my grandma can walk again and go back to being the happy person that she has always been. Everything and anything helps and we sincerely thank you.
