Eyad Abo Abdou and his family need to escape the war in Gaza. Their lives are at risk every day. They want to cross the border into Egypt. Once in Egypt, they hope to go to Australia were they have family.
Eyad’s family is his wife Asma and their five children Farah, Anas, Muhammad, Yazan and Yousef. Eyad is an Arabic teacher and holds a master’s degree. Asma also has a bachelor’s degree but is a stay at home mother while their kids are at school.
They are deeply traumatised by their displacement, the constant attacks and the deaths of Eyad’s mother Zainab, sister Iman and 2 year old nephew Hassan.
They are people like us who had good lives, a nice home and careers they enjoyed. They desperately want to be safe again.
The Egyptian border crossing costs approx $5000 USD for each person and there are 7 people to get across.
Here is Eyad’s story in his words:
My family consists of seven people. I have five children: Farah, Anas, Muhammad, Yazan, and Youssef. I had a beautiful house that was destroyed due to the war on Gaza, and now we live in a tent. My children feel very afraid, cold, and hungry. Therefore, my children are appealing to anyone with every living conscience to help them get out of Gaza.
I work as an Arabic language teacher and hold a master’s degree. My family consists of seven members, and a wife who holds a bachelor’s degree but is a housewife. We were exposed to a lot of pain and sorrow during previous wars, but the last war was very cruel.
On the morning of Saturday, October 7, 2023, the war on Gaza began. Our house has been completely demolished due to the war on Gaza. My young children felt very afraid, especially at night. I was hugging them, trying to comfort them, but the war was very violent, and our first displacement was from our house located in the Al-Nasr neighborhood to my uncle’s house in the Beach refugee camp. Two days later, the war intensified. Houses next to us were bombed, and glass and stones fell on us. My children became extremely terrified. Then we had to flee for the second time to the UNRWA clinic. We sat without water or cover for two more days. The bombing and killing approached us.
Our third exodus was to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and because of the location It was so crowded we sat for 48 hours without sleep on the hospital stairs Then we moved to an UNRWA school in search of security. The next day, the vicinity of the school was bombed. A number of innocent people were killed. My sister Iman was killed. It was our fifth exodus from Gaza to the Nuseirat area on foot, then to Deir al-Balah camp. We sat for two weeks. In one of the UNRWA schools, my nephew Hassan, a two-year-old child, was killed when he and his father were walking next to one of the houses that were targeted. Our last displacement was to the city of Rafah, where we have been for 100 days, and we do not know where our displacement will end.
In conclusion, I ask you, my wife and our children, to help us get out of Gaza.
I and my family extend my sincere thanks, appreciation and respect to you.
