Dear brothers and sisters,
With heavy hearts, we share the tragic news of the passing of Hananuddin Nezami, a 23-year-old Afghan refugee who lost his life a few days ago in Italy due to drowning.
Hananuddin left his war-torn homeland and beloved family behind, arriving in Italy seven months ago with nothing but hope. He crossed dangerous borders, walked endless miles, and endured countless hardships—all to seek a better future where he could support his family in Afghanistan.
His elderly father is ill and unable to work. As the eldest of seven siblings, Hananuddin carried his family’s hopes. In desperation, his parents took loans and sold their few valuable belongings to send him abroad, praying he would lift them from crushing poverty.
His unexpected death has left his family devastated emotionally and financially. Without legal documentation, he received no institutional and community support. Only Hayatullah Muhammadi, a 23-year-old compatriot who knew him in Afghanistan, has stepped forward to shoulder the immense burden of arranging the funeral and repatriating Hananuddin’s body to his grieving family.
The Afghan Writers’ Strategic Center in Canada has launched this urgent campaign to cover funeral expenses, repatriation to Afghanistan, and essential support for his impoverished family. This is more than charity—it is our duty.
No Afghan should face life or death alone. Together, we can honor this young man’s sacrifice and help his family endure unimaginable grief.
We are raising funds to make this possible. Your support will help cover the costs of repatriating Hanandudin’s body, his burial in Afghanistan, and providing financial support to his grieving family during this difficult time.
Every dollar counts. Every share matters.
