Ashton Bergan is a sport mad 13-year-old who is currently defying all odds.
In February 2022 in a swimming accident the unthinkable happened, he broke his neck at the C5, damaged his spinal cord, leaving him diagnosed with quadriplegia. Prior to his accident Ashton was a standout athlete, participating at a competitive level with Basketball, Rugby League, Soccer and Swimming. Every spare minute was spent playing sport.
This diagnosis resulted in Ashton being immediately hospitalised for the next 4 months where he was up against a real battle. Faced with the daunting task of learning to walk again and regaining his functional mobility, Ashton has put all his competitive spirit, courage and determination to the test with months of gruelling rehabilitation.
With the amazing support of the team at Westmead Children’s Hospital, his dedicated family, and his hard work, Ashton has miraculously reached his first goal of walking out of the Hospital and starting to transition back to school. He really is the ‘miracle boy’ that his rehab team have named him.
What’s Next…
It doesn’t stop here for Team Ash. He is determined to be back to competitive sports and determined to fully recover and help those who face similar challenges in life. Ashton is passionate about making a difference and to give back he is taking part in a medical case study and has volunteered to regularly visit the hospital to help others.
Ashton’s family is an amazing family, who are part of the community and give so much. Funds raised will go to help support Ashton’s rehabilitation and ongoing recovery. Initially with the set up of some customised equipment for home as well as access to external rehab facilities that will maximise his chances of walking, running, and playing sport like he used to. The end goal is to get him as close as possible to his life before the accident. All funds raised more than his rehabilitation needs will be going to support the Orthopaedic Ward and Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation team at Westmead Children’s Hospital, to ensure they can continue to do the great work they do and help others like Ashton.
