Ji'Rah's Story
Hi, I am Zandra Richardson, the long-time Director of Rainey Institute,
an inner-city arts organization in Cleveland. That’s where I met the
Hussein-Bey family. If you are a Rainey Alum, you may know this
family; Shafeeqa, Brenda, Michael Bilal, Faruq, Anisha, Nefeteria,
Thurayya, Mujahid, and Solomon. I am sharing the story of Shafeeqa’s
son, Ji’Rah in efforts to raise money for his medical needs.
On April 7, 2024, at 9:22 p.m. Ji’Rah Mitchell Bey, a responsible, fun-
loving 23-year-old, became the victim of a drive-by military-grade assault
rifle shooting on Cleveland’s west side. Needless to say, the family is
devastated and life will never be the same. Ji’Rah was simply in the
wrong place at the wrong time. While getting his car
repaired, a stray bullet from an unknown assailant
ripped through his back, hitting his spine, liver, &
kidney before exiting his abdominal area. Within a
few minutes, he was at Metro Health Hospital
undergoing major surgery to save his life. His
family stood nearby, waiting and praying. By the
grace of God, Ji’Rah survived. He was classified as
a paraplegic, paralyzed from his waist down. Ji’Rah
has endured 4 surgeries, 8 procedures and countless
hours of physical therapy designed to strengthen
his upper-body for successful use of a wheelchair.
He returned home on May 31, 2024.
Moving Forward
Ji’Rah has a warm smile and a tenacious spirit. He has a
loving girlfriend and beautiful daughter. He is moving
forward with hope and a lot of love and support from his
family. His Medical needs are significant. He will need the
following;
1. A motorized “lift” - $7000
2. A durable and highly functional wheelchair - $4000
3. 6 Months personal care supplies and expenses
(bedroom and hygiene aids) totaling $2000
Any contribution you can make to help Ji’Rah and his
family to thrive after this tragedy is appreciated. No
amount is too small. Thank you for caring!
