Hello everyone! This fundraiser is for the benefit of my wonderful wife, Speranca, of 34 years. She had several mini strokes while in the hospital in May of 2018 as recent, but suffered a major stroke in the summer of 2009. She lost use of her left side for several months, but through therapy has regained about 75% of her movement back. She has been home now for a little over a year - we are managing, however she is not fully recovered and is unable to walk. She is confined to a wheelchair and this has changed our life style, our home living, and getting around dramatically. Some construction/renovation work has already been done in our home to accommodate her with wheelchair access. A small group of construction workers from the Kitchener/Waterloo area have come and renovated our washroom facilities by installing a sloped floor, a new shower and vanity and a wider entrance door. Many others from our town and local church have also pitched in to help make this renovation possible as well as donate funds to purchase and install a stair lift. Still others have even brought meals once a week to assist me in easing the burden of all the other duties that I need to do and accomplish around the house that she normally did, such as cooking, baking, laundry, dishes and everything else. This has helped immensely.
Currently, we are planning on doing some needful construction to the outside of the residence to help her to get in and out of the house more easily, so she can enjoy the outdoors. She really likes the garden, and the peaceful back yard, but is limited to go outdoors due to the sidewalk steps and general layout of the gravel drive way. We also have a lot of trouble getting into and out of the car, as she has trouble lifting her legs to maneuver about. Several times she almost fell as it requires a balancing act with the one good foot. We have received quotes on the driveway and a ramp leading to the front of the house and a small section at the rear of the house, so she can visit the backyard, which is approx $14,000 dollars. This includes tearing up the old section of walkway that is present and widening the area of the driveway so we have more access for the wheelchair to maneuver up to the vehicle. Also a quote was received of $4,000 plus, (as the contractor is still unsure what is fully involved), that consists of the widening and installing a new front entry screen door with a flush bottom sill. The final fundraiser help is for the purchase of a wheelchair van. We have checked online and the best value that has been researched is averaging around $30,000. This would be a used van with around 80,000 km and 5 years old. We have looked at many different models, but the prices are somewhat generally high. (New ones are in the $75,000+ range). With more searching, we could probably get a better deal. The van would also be necessary with the new wheelchair (spelled out below), as it's total weight alone is a little more than 300 lbs. This is not something you just fold up and throw in the trunk.
We were looking to receive funding based as the need is outlined here.
Do the driveway/ramp access first, install the wider front entry door, and finally purchase an easier accessible mode of transportation. We were anticipating to start the driveway and walkway this year, and progress on the other two projects the following year as funding would become available.
One other quick necessity that is not included in this funding project is that my wife is getting an electric wheelchair due to sores she has developed on the bottom of her right foot. This is due to the fact she uses her right foot to move about the house, and being diabetic, other health concerns have been added to her aggravation. This wheelchair is in the price range of $20,000. It is a special chair recommended by her health care professionals and it has the option to recline. It also has a special seat cushion and back that has multiple inflatable air bags that adjust for comfort. This is important as she is in this chair all day long. We are hoping it will be covered by our health insurance provider, but until we receive more information, we cannot elaborate on all the costs or how much will be covered. So we have left this out of the funding project.
August 4 2020. AN UPDATE ON THE WHEELCHAIR: We have received the price for the wheelchair which is $17,185.80 It has been ordered and should arrive in two weeks.
We have to pay $4,896.45 (which has been paid August 4 2020). The insurance has paid $12,289.35
Receiving funding for these projects will mean so much to us as she loves to get outdoors and enjoy nature and the sunshine. It will also help reduce the stress level and work load on the both of us. We believe it will also give her encouragement to get up and going as she visits the back yard to see the progress of growing plants, the fresh vegetables in the garden, and to hear the sounds of birds in the air. These are all motivators that would improve her health and overall well being. Through the help of the many family members and friends and even people we don't know, we can turn this physical, emotional, and life changing experience that she is going through, into a warm memory. There is no greater gift than that of good health.
One other point that I need to mention before the closing remarks - I don't have a lot of social media. So feel free to share, those that have access to Facebook etc....
This will be your chance to advance this fundraiser to it's maximum potential.
We would be so grateful and appreciative for all the financial help you would contribute to bring these projects to reality and completion. In advance, we humbly extend our sincerest gratitude and thanks to all that give. May God not only bless abundantly, but give you a heart to give freely, for He is the one that can magnify and provide all things more than we can imagine.
